Chapter 4 - Ethan

The hospital asked if we wanted to see him.

For ten minutes I said no.

Then yes.

Then no again.

Daniel never pressured.

A nurse named Maria sat beside me.

“You can change your mind as many times as you need.”

Eventually I said:

“Yes.”

They brought Ethan wrapped in a white blanket.

He was small.

Perfect.

Still.

Daniel held him first because my arms shook too badly.

Then placed him against me.

I touched his cheek.

“I’m sorry.”

Daniel immediately said:

“No.”

I looked.

“You did not do this.”

My brain did not care.

I had gone to dinner.

I had spoken back.

I had stepped toward patio.

Grief turns sequence into guilt.

If I had stayed home.

If I had not answered.

If I had made Daniel cancel.

If.

Maria said nothing.

Good.

Then Daniel whispered:

“He looks like you.”

I laughed and sobbed.

“He has your nose.”

We stayed with him more than an hour.

The hospital offered photographs.

Footprints.

A small knitted cap.

I wanted all.

Then nothing.

Then all again.

Daniel signed forms when I could not.

We named him formally.

Ethan James Carter.

Not Baby Carter.

Not fetus.

Our son.

Later Detective Lena Morales arrived.

Plain clothes.

She introduced gently.

“We can wait.”

I said:

“No.”

Daniel sat.

The detective asked me to describe from beginning.

I did.

Dinner.

Move.

Argument.

Margaret saying baby carried their name.

Kick.

Pain.

Patio.

Shove.

Fall.

Another blow outside.

Daniel arriving.

Margaret demanding I lie.

No dramatics.

Lena asked:

“Did you strike Margaret?”

“No.”

“Threaten?”

“No.”

“Touch her?”

“No.”

“Had there been physical incidents before?”

“No.”

Important.

Cruel words, yes.

Physical no.

Then Daniel.

He described hearing chair fall, running back, seeing me stagger out door, mother follow, then finding me on ground.

He admitted pushing his mother away.

Admitted grabbing wrists.

Admitted saying:

“If you touch her again, I will kill you.”

I looked.

He had not told me.

He closed eyes.

“I said it.”

Detective nodded.

“Camera audio captured.”

Daniel stared.

“Am I in trouble?”

“I’m not deciding anything.”

Then:

“Context matters.”

He had used force to stop ongoing attack.

No evidence he struck Margaret after danger ended.

Body camera showed him cooperative.

Margaret had minor wrist redness from restraint.

No serious injury.

Then Lena asked about camera.

Daniel explained he installed system and remained administrator.

“Did you edit clip?”

“No.”

Cloud provider logs would verify original hash and upload.

Good.

Then security company preserved under warrant/request.

Margaret had logged in from her phone at 8:11 p.m.

She attempted delete motion events.

The system required primary administrator approval.

Daniel’s account.

Deletion failed.

She had tried.

Then Robert.

Detective said:

“Your father gave a preliminary statement.”

Daniel looked.

“What did he say?”

“That Margaret kicked Emily inside the kitchen before exterior assault.”

Then:

“He also said Margaret had been talking for weeks about stopping you from moving.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“What does that mean?”

“We are still asking.”

Then Lena looked at me.

“One more thing.”

“What?”

“Your mother in law told officers she had documentation showing you were emotionally unstable and had been threatening to isolate Daniel from his family.”

I stared.

“What documentation?”

“She said there is a file in the home office.”

Daniel looked confused.

“What file?”

“She called it her Emily file.”

Cold moved through me.

Margaret had not only been criticizing me.

May you like

She had been keeping records.

And the police were now asking why.
