Chapter 23 - The Letter I Finally Answered

Margaret turned seventy eight.

She sent me a birthday? no. Instead she wrote one final substantial letter.

Emily,

I have apologized many times, and I know repeated apology can become demand for absolution.

Good start.

I do not need response.

Then:

I want to leave one thing clear before I am old enough that memory becomes excuse.

I remember what I did.

I remember kicking you.

I remember following you.

I remember pushing you.

I remember seeing blood and thinking first about protecting myself.

I remember telling you to lie.

No revision.

Then:

I did not intend Ethan to die.

I also understand that intention does not return him.

Then:

I spent years believing your anxiety proved weakness.

Prison taught me something humiliating.

I needed medication there.

I needed therapy.

I needed help.

None of that made me less human.

I cried.

Then:

I used your treatment against you because I wanted a story where I was the safer woman.

There.

Then:

You were his mother.

I was not.

I was his grandmother, and I destroyed the chance to become one.

Then:

Grace owes me nothing.

Daniel owes me nothing.

Robert owes me nothing.

You owe me nothing.

I am sorry.

Margaret.

I sat with letter three days.

Then replied.

Margaret,

I believe you remember.

I believe you changed.

I forgive you.

My hands shook writing.

Then:

Forgiveness does not change what happened, and it does not create any new rights in our lives.

I know you understand that now.

Then:

You may continue the relationship with Grace and Daniel that we have agreed to.

I am not ready for a close relationship with you.

But I no longer want to carry hatred.

Emily.

Daniel read.

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Feel different?”

“No.”

Then next day:

“A little.”

Margaret replied:

Thank you. I understand.

No flood.

No visit request.

Good.

Then Robert heard.

He said:

“I am glad for you.”

Not:

for Margaret.

Then his health declined.

At eighty two, Robert had stroke.

Daniel rushed.

Margaret asked through Daniel whether she could visit ex husband.

Robert was conscious.

He chose.

“Yes.”

She came.

Carol sat.

Awkward.

Margaret held Robert’s hand briefly.

“I’m sorry.”

Robert smiled tired.

“We already did this.”

Then:

“I know.”

He survived stroke with limitations.

Carol remained.

Margaret left.

No reunion.

Then Grace at sixteen decided to visit Margaret alone? We weren't ready maybe with Daniel nearby. Eventually she could as teen. We allowed daytime with check ins.

Margaret never asked her to choose sides.

Then Grace came home.

“She told me Grandpa Robert was right to leave.”

I looked.

Interesting.

Then:

“She said she used to think divorce was betrayal.”

Change.

Then Grace asked:

“Do you think she’s good now?”

I said:

“People are not one word.”

She hated answer.

“But yes or no?”

“I think she behaves safer now.”

That is what mattered.

Then Ethan’s fifteenth birthday.

No big gathering.

Just Daniel and me.

Grace had plans with friends.

We let.

She did not owe ritual.

We lit candle.

Then put out.

Life includes moving.

Then Daniel asked:

“Would you do everything same?”

“No.”

“What?”

“I would skip dinner.”

We both laughed sadly.

Alternate timelines never die entirely.

Then:

“But after?”

I thought.

“I would still call police.”

“Yes.”

“I would still testify.”

“Yes.”

May you like

“I would still name Ethan.”

Always.
