Chapter 18 - Robert Chooses His Own Life

Robert was seventy five when he began seeing a woman named Carol.

He told Daniel first.

“I’m not asking permission.”

Daniel laughed.

“Good.”

Then:

“I’m telling.”

Carol was retired librarian.

She knew case.

Everyone did locally enough.

She did not want meet us immediately.

Good.

Robert had learned slow.

Then Margaret wrote him from prison.

Their divorce final years.

She apologized.

He read.

Did not reconcile.

He said:

“I forgive some things.”

Then:

“I cannot go back.”

No cruelty.

Then he asked us if Carol could attend Grace’s second birthday.

We discussed.

Yes.

She brought one book.

No grandparent title.

Grace called her Carol.

Fine.

Then Robert visited Ethan’s grave on anniversary.

We had chosen small memorial stone in family cemetery near my mother’s side? Let's say private cemetery. He asked if allowed.

Yes.

He did not take photos.

Then one day he brought me a box from old house storage he had forgotten.

Inside was Margaret’s copy of baby shower guest list.

Notes.

Emily’s mother side too involved.

Robert stared.

“I almost threw away.”

I read.

Then laughed.

“Of course.”

No new crime.

Just old Margaret.

I shredded.

We did not need preserve every insult as evidence now.

Then Robert said:

“I think I spent marriage waiting for her to calm down.”

I looked.

“Did she?”

“Sometimes.”

Then:

“Long enough to make me doubt bad parts.”

That is how cycles persist.

Then Daniel asked:

“Did you love her?”

“Yes.”

“Still?”

Robert thought.

“Yes.”

Then:

“I do not want her back.”

Complex.

Then Margaret’s release approached.

Seven year sentence with active term, credits? She could be eligible around five and a half or six with credits. But user wants final. Let's say after serving just over six years including applicable credits, she became eligible for supervised release. The exact jurisdiction allows. Fine.

A victim notification arrived.

My hands shook.

Margaret Carter scheduled for release in ninety days.

No contact order would continue as condition for specified period.

I had not thought about her outside prison in years.

Grace was four.

She had never met Margaret.

Daniel sat.

“What do you want?”

“Distance.”

“Me too.”

Then prosecutor’s victim services helped renew civil protective order? Could seek no contact. Given history and no recent threats, maybe conditions already. We requested that she not contact or approach us during supervision. Granted as release condition.

Then Margaret through attorney asked one question:

Would Daniel permit a letter after release?

Daniel asked me.

“Do you want?”

“I don’t care if you receive.”

Then:

“Not Grace.”

“Agreed.”

He said yes to one letter.

It arrived a month after release.

Margaret was living with her sister in another county.

She wrote:

Daniel,

I know Grace exists. I understand I am not entitled to meet her.

Then:

I spent years thinking grandmother meant claim. It means relationship, and relationship can be lost.

Strong.

Then:

I will not contact Emily or Grace.

Then:

If you ever choose to write, I will answer. If not, I will accept.

Daniel read twice.

“Do you believe?”

I said:

“Behavior will tell.”

Exactly.

For one year, Margaret did nothing.

No surprise visit.

No gifts.

No messages through Robert.

No social media.

Behavior.

Then Daniel decided to write.

Not meet.

A letter.

I am alive. Emily is doing well. Grace is growing. I am still angry. I do not know whether I want a relationship. I appreciate you respecting boundary.

Margaret responded:

Thank you.

Nothing else.

That was more restraint than she had shown in decades.

Maybe prison.

Maybe age.

Maybe loss.

May you like

Change did not erase Ethan.

It only changed what happened next.
