Chapter 23 - What I Kept

I kept:
My father’s house.
Ridgeway.
My wheelchair.
A box of trial documents.
The mudroom key Allison gave me.
For years, it sat in drawer.
Tiny brass thing.
One day I held it and realized I did not need it.
The mudroom door had been replaced.
Lock gone.
Key opened nothing.
I almost threw away.
Instead, I placed in envelope with note:
This opened one door once.
Then stored with legal archive.
Not shrine.
Context.
I did not keep rope.
After appeals, sheriff’s department asked about disposition.
Destroy.
I said yes.
No ceremony.
No need to touch it.
The damaged wheelchair also went.
May you like
Insurance replaced.
Life moved.
