Chapter 9 - The Man Beneath Bellweather

Gabriel Sterling climbed the stairs slowly.

He looked older than Julian but carried the same straight posture and dark eyes. A scar crossed his throat. One hand rested on a silver cane.

Elena stopped breathing.

“You died.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“So did you.”

Then he saw me.

Every line in his face changed.

“Marianne’s daughter.”

Not my daughter.

Not Maya.

Marianne’s daughter.

I held Lily closer.

“Are you Gabriel?”

“Yes.”

“Are you my father?”

His silence lasted too long.

“I provided the blood that created you.”

The answer was colder than the question deserved.

Julian moved beside me.

“What have you been doing under our family home?”

“Protecting what remained.”

The vault contained shelves of ledgers, servers, and property deeds. Gabriel had lived inside a hidden residence beneath Bellweather for nearly three years.

Olivia supplied him.

That revelation turned every assumption again.

She had not abducted Eleanor to steal the vault alone.

She was working with Gabriel.

Olivia smiled.

“You thought I served Richard?”

Richard stared at his mother.

She continued.

“Your humiliation of Maya was useful, but you were never important.”

He looked toward Vanessa as if expecting comfort.

She lowered her phone.

No one wanted to stand beside the discarded tool.

Gabriel explained that Malcolm Vance and Arthur Sterling stole from the trust together. Malcolm wanted money. Arthur wanted control over every family member who might challenge him.

Marianne and Gabriel discovered the theft.

They also fell in love.

They were not biologically related.

Gabriel had been raised as Arthur’s son, but DNA records proved he was the child of Eleanor’s first husband and another woman.

The family concealed that fact to avoid scandal.

Marianne became pregnant with me.

Arthur ordered both of them removed.

Gabriel survived the boat explosion and disappeared.

He believed Marianne died at Bellweather.

Elena escaped with the infant.

Years later, Gabriel learned Marianne had survived under another identity. Before he reached her, she died at St. Catherine’s.

“You knew Maya was alive?” Julian asked.

“Not until six years ago.”

“Why did you not contact her?”

“Because she was safe.”

I laughed.

The sound surprised everyone.

“Safe?”

I pointed toward Richard.

“I married a man selected to control me. His mother knew who I was. My daughter was abducted. I was assaulted in front of forty seven people.”

Gabriel’s expression did not change.

“You remained alive.”

“That is not the same as safe.”

Lily tightened her arms around my neck.

Gabriel looked at her.

For the first time, emotion crossed his face.

“The trust requires a third generation heir.”

Julian stepped between them.

“You are not touching the child.”

Gabriel smiled faintly.

“You finally learned suspicion.”

He opened the main ledger.

The suspended Sterling fortune had not remained untouched. Gabriel secretly moved funds into companies controlled by Orchid Shore Holdings.

Julian’s empire had been built partly from the missing trust.

Julian stared at the records.

“My company was founded with my inheritance.”

“With Maya’s inheritance too,” Gabriel said.

The guardianship petition would have consolidated the assets under Julian, then allowed Gabriel to control them through hidden board agreements.

Elena had believed she was exposing a conspiracy.

In reality, Gabriel allowed her to arrange the birthday because he needed Maya, Julian, Eleanor, and the orchid ring together.

Every path led to Bellweather.

Gabriel wanted the vault fully opened.

The final chamber required Maya’s signature and Lily’s blood.

“No,” I said.

“The money belongs to both of you.”

“Then release it without using my child.”

“The system was created by Arthur. I cannot change it.”

“Systems can be destroyed.”

Gabriel’s calm finally broke.

“You would burn four billion dollars?”

“If the price is Lily.”

Richard laughed from the ballroom entrance.

“You spent years calling me cruel because I wanted a small piece of it.”

I looked at him.

“You shoved my face into our daughter’s cake because someone paid your debts.”

“I brought you here.”

“You brought yourself to prison.”

Detective Bennett’s voice sounded from above.

Police had entered after Julian disabled the gate sensors through the tunnel.

Vanessa ran toward the balcony exit.

Thomas stopped her.

Olivia pulled a gun from beneath Eleanor’s wheelchair.

She aimed at Gabriel.

“You promised the Vance shares would be restored.”

Gabriel looked at her with contempt.

“Your father never owned them.”

“You used me.”

“As your family used Maya.”

Olivia fired.

Elena pushed me and Lily behind a stone pillar.

The bullet struck Gabriel’s chest.

He fell against the vault console.

Every screen activated.

A countdown appeared.

Trust destruction protocol initiated.

Ten minutes.

Gabriel looked at me, blood spreading across his shirt.
