Chapter 8 - The Price of Lily’s Life

Richard carried Lily into the service elevator before Bennett could fire.

The doors closed around him.

I heard Lily screaming for me as the elevator descended.

Every instinct inside me broke at once.

I ran toward the stairs.

Elena caught my arm.

“That is what they want.”

“They have my daughter.”

“If you enter Bellweather without a plan, they will keep both of you.”

I tore away from her.

“For thirty years, everyone in this family has called manipulation protection. Do not do it to me.”

She released me.

Bennett tracked the elevator to the loading dock. A black sport utility vehicle left thirty seconds before police reached the ramp.

Richard’s phone transmitted one message.

Bring Maya and the orchid ring to Bellweather before noon. No police. Lily dies if the gate sensors detect armed officers.

Julian arrived at the hotel in twelve minutes.

He no longer looked like a polished businessman.

His tie was gone. Blood marked his knuckles from fighting through the men who took Eleanor.

He blamed himself.

I had no space for his guilt.

“Can the gate detect weapons?”

“Yes. Bellweather was renovated with Sterling military security systems.”

“Can you disable them?”

“Not remotely.”

Elena knew a service tunnel from the shoreline.

Julian did not.

Their distrust became immediate.

“You expect us to follow you through a tunnel no one can verify?” he asked.

“You expect Maya to trust the man whose company filed to control her?”

“I did not file it.”

“You built the system that allowed it.”

I stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Lily was four years old.

She did not care who had the stronger claim to the Sterling name.

She needed her mother.

We created two approaches.

I would enter the main gate with the ring.

Julian and Elena would use the shoreline tunnel without weapons. Bennett positioned police outside the sensor boundary and prepared to enter once the security network failed.

At Bellweather, Richard waited beneath the birthday banner.

The smashed cake had been removed, but pink frosting still stained the grass.

He held Lily near the terrace.

My daughter’s face was wet with tears.

Olivia stood beside Eleanor’s wheelchair.

Vanessa filmed from the balcony.

Even now, she believed recording gave her power.

“Let Lily come to me,” I said.

Olivia extended her hand.

“The ring first.”

I removed the chain.

Richard watched it with desperate hunger.

Paige had promised to erase his debts.

Olivia promised him something larger.

“What did she offer you?” I asked.

“A fresh start.”

“You had one. You used it to hurt us.”

His jaw tightened.

“I never wanted this.”

“You grabbed our daughter.”

“My mother said nobody would be harmed.”

The same language from every coward.

Someone else promised.

Someone else planned.

Someone else carried the blame.

I held the ring above the garden table.

“Release Lily, or I throw it into the pool.”

Olivia nodded to Richard.

He pushed Lily forward.

She ran into my arms.

I held her so tightly she cried from the pressure.

“I am sorry.”

“You came.”

“Always.”

Richard reached for the ring.

I pulled it back.

Olivia’s expression hardened.

“The agreement was the child for the key.”

“She is not an object to trade.”

“Neither is the trust.”

Eleanor lifted her head.

“You turned everything into property, Olivia.”

Olivia looked at her with hatred older than Richard and me.

“My father served your family for twenty years. The Sterlings treated him like a servant while using his mind to build their wealth.”

“He stole from children.”

“He took what your husband refused to pay him.”

Eleanor’s voice remained calm.

“Malcolm did not want payment. He wanted ownership of people.”

Olivia ordered us toward the ballroom.

The floor beneath the chandelier displayed a silver orchid inlay.

I placed the ring at its center.

Nothing happened.

Olivia looked at Eleanor.

“Your blood.”

She cut Eleanor’s palm with a small blade and pressed it against the orchid.

Still nothing.

“It needs Maya,” Eleanor said.

I held Lily behind me.

Olivia cut my finger before I could pull away.

My blood touched the silver.

A section of the ballroom floor opened.

Stairs descended into darkness.

At that moment, the terrace windows shattered.

Julian and Elena entered from opposite sides.

No weapons.

Only rage.

Richard grabbed Lily again.

I struck him across the face and pulled her free.

Julian moved toward Olivia.

Vanessa screamed from the balcony.

“Someone else is downstairs.”

A light glowed beneath the floor.

A man stood inside the vault.

He looked up at me.

My own eyes stared back.

Gabriel Sterling.

My father.

May you like

Alive.

Continue to the next part: Maya’s father emerges from the hidden vault, but both Sterling sisters believed he died before she was born.
