Chapter 7 - The Woman Outside the Door

Detective Bennett drew her weapon.

Lily sat on the bedroom floor coloring beneath the supervision of a female officer. I moved toward her, but Bennett signaled for me to remain behind the wall.

The door opened.

A hotel housekeeper entered pushing a cart.

The officer checked her identification.

Valid.

Then the housekeeper removed her wig.

Dark red hair fell around her shoulders.

A thin scar marked her left temple.

“My name is Elena Sterling,” she said. “And I raised Maya as Anna Mercer.”

I knew the voice.

Older.

Rougher.

But familiar enough to hurt.

“Mom?”

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

For six years, I had dreamed of hearing her answer.

“Yes.”

I crossed half the room before stopping.

Every trap in my life had arrived wearing something familiar.

Bennett searched her.

No weapon.

She carried a medical identification card under the name Paige Nolan and a flash drive hidden inside her sleeve.

“You hired Richard to humiliate me,” I said.

“I hired him to bring you to Bellweather.”

“He shoved my face into Lily’s cake.”

“I told him to create a public confrontation. I did not order violence.”

“You knew what kind of man he was.”

“I knew he would expose himself if enough people watched.”

“You used my daughter’s birthday.”

Pain crossed her face.

“I had no other way to force Julian, Eleanor, Richard, and Olivia into one place.”

She believed Bellweather House contained records hidden by Malcolm Vance. The doors would open only after a Sterling family biometric system recognized several blood relatives on the property.

Julian.

Eleanor.

Maya.

Possibly Elena.

The birthday party gathered enough family members to activate it.

The ring was part of the key.

Elena had arranged the free mansion, Julian’s invitation, and Paige’s contact with Richard.

She expected me to wear the ring because I always kept it beneath my clothing.

“What opened?” Bennett asked.

“A vault under the old ballroom.”

Security had not found it during the first search.

Elena knew the entrance appeared only after midnight following a full biometric activation.

Inside were the original trust ledgers and recordings proving who stole the Sterling money.

“Why not tell Julian?”

“Because Julian’s company contains the people who took it.”

“What about the guardianship petition?”

Elena looked toward the flash drive.

“I created it.”

Julian’s forged signature was intentional.

She wanted him to see how easily his own systems could be used against Maya.

“I needed to know whether he would accept control.”

“He denied signing it.”

“But did he reject the idea?”

I remembered his response.

He said someone expected him to claim me.

He had not defended the guardianship itself.

Elena did not trust him.

Neither did I.

But I trusted her even less.

“You let me bury you.”

“I was poisoned at St. Catherine’s. The woman you saw die was Marianne.”

The room became silent.

Elena said Marianne had found her six years earlier. The sisters had spent decades living under exchanged names.

Elena raised me as Anna Mercer.

Marianne remained hidden, collecting evidence against the Vance network.

When Elena became ill, Marianne entered the hospital using her identity to protect her.

The poison killed Marianne.

I watched the wrong sister die.

Elena disappeared because the killers believed the surviving woman was dead.

“Why did Marianne do that?”

“She was your mother.”

I felt the floor shift beneath me.

The woman standing before me had raised me.

The woman I buried had given birth to me.

Both had loved me.

Both had lied.

Elena inserted the flash drive into Bennett’s isolated laptop.

A recording showed Malcolm Vance, Arthur Sterling, and several executives signing a private agreement thirty years earlier.

The trust theft involved property, hospitals, and pension funds.

One younger woman stood behind them.

Olivia Vance.

Richard’s mother had known everything since childhood.

The recording continued.

A pregnant Marianne entered the room carrying the orchid ring. She threatened to release copies of the ledger.

Arthur Sterling struck her.

Gabriel tried to protect her.

Malcolm ordered security to take both of them downstairs.

The file ended before revealing what happened.

Elena said the complete recording remained inside Bellweather’s vault.

We had to retrieve it before Olivia reached it.

Bennett contacted officers at the mansion.

No one answered.

The security feed showed the front gate open.

Julian’s guards were unconscious.

A vehicle left the property carrying Eleanor Sterling.

Olivia stood beside her in the passenger seat.

Elena looked at me.

“She is taking your grandmother to open the vault.”

Julian called at the same moment.

His voice was controlled, but fear cut through it.

“Eleanor is gone. Olivia left a message.”

“What does she want?”

“The ring and Maya.”

Lily appeared in the bedroom doorway.

She had heard her name.

Then the hotel fire alarm sounded.

The officer beside Lily collapsed.

A dart protruded from her neck.

Richard stepped from the service hallway and grabbed our daughter.

Continue to the next part: Richard abducts Lily under Olivia’s orders, forcing Maya to return to Bellweather House with the ring.
