Chapter 2 - The Man at the Gate“My mother gave it to me.”

Maya’s answer came quickly.

The stranger’s expression barely changed.

“What was her name?”

Richard came down the steps.

“Okay, that’s enough.”

The stranger still did not look at him.

Maya shifted Lily higher against her hip.

“Who are you?”

“Julian Sterling.”

The name meant nothing to her.

It meant something to Richard.

His posture changed.

Only slightly.

“You’re Sterling Capital?”

Julian finally looked at him.

“Yes.”

Richard’s aggression softened into something more careful.

The transformation disgusted Maya.

Thirty seconds earlier he had been ready to block her from leaving.

Now a richer man stood near the gate and suddenly Richard remembered manners.

“I didn’t realize you were coming.”

“I wasn’t coming for you.”

Julian looked at Maya again.

“What was your mother’s name?”

Maya remembered her mother’s warning.

If anyone recognizes it, listen before you speak.

Not answer every question.

Listen.

“Why?”

Julian hesitated.

That made Maya trust him slightly more.

A liar would have answered too fast.

“Because I have seen another ring exactly like that once in my life.”

Richard moved beside her.

“Maya, get inside.”

“No.”

His eyes sharpened.

“We’re not doing this here.”

“We’re not doing anything anymore.”

Lily buried her face against Maya’s neck.

Julian noticed.

So did the two suited men who had stepped from the black sedan.

They did not approach.

Good.

Julian spoke quietly.

“Do you have somewhere safe to go?”

Maya’s pride rose automatically.

“Yes.”

She did not.

Richard laughed.

“She has a waitress friend with a couch.”

Maya turned.

“Keep laughing.”

Vanessa had followed them outside and retrieved her phone.

She started filming again.

“You should hear what she says when the cameras aren’t on.”

Julian looked toward the phone.

“Is that the original recording from the cake?”

Vanessa’s smile faded.

“Why?”

“Because if it is, don’t delete it.”

Richard stepped toward him.

“Are you threatening us?”

“No.”

Julian’s tone remained level.

“I’m telling her not to destroy evidence.”

Vanessa lowered the phone.

Maya looked at Julian carefully.

He was not trying to rescue her.

Not yet.

He was observing.

That was different.

A car pulled up across the street.

Rachel Pierce leaned over and pushed open the passenger door.

Maya’s coworker from the diner.

The one person she had texted from the bedroom.

COME NOW. PLEASE.

Rachel saw Maya’s face.

Then Richard.

Then Lily crying.

Her expression changed.

“Get in.”

Maya moved.

Richard caught the suitcase handle.

“You walk out and don’t come back.”

Maya looked at his hand.

Then at him.

“Let go.”

“You heard me.”

“Good.”

He released the suitcase.

Olivia appeared behind him.

“Maya, don’t make Lily homeless because you’re embarrassed.”

Maya almost answered.

Then Lily whispered:

“I want to go.”

That was enough.

Maya placed the suitcase in Rachel’s trunk.

Before getting in, Julian spoke once more.

“Maya.”

She turned.

He held out a business card.

She did not take it.

“What?”

“If anyone contacts you about the ring, call the number on this.”

“How would anyone contact me?”

His expression became unreadable.

“I don’t know yet.”

Maya stared at him.

Then accepted the card.

Nothing more.

Rachel drove away.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then Lily asked:

“Is Daddy mad?”

Maya looked through the back window.

Richard’s house disappeared behind them.

“Yes.”

“Is he mad at me?”

“No.”

“Why did Grandma call you a waitress?”

Maya closed her eyes.

Because Lorraine thought serving food meant serving people.

Because Richard had spent years using Maya’s job to convince her she was lucky he chose her.

Because Maya had let humiliation become ordinary.

But Lily was four.

So Maya said:

“Grandma forgot how to be kind.”

Rachel looked at Maya’s reflection in the mirror.

“What happened?”

Maya told her enough.

Not everything.

Rachel drove them to her small apartment in Queens.

One bedroom.

Maya and Lily took the bed.

Rachel took the couch.

At 10:18 that night, Maya finally checked her phone.

One hundred twelve missed notifications.

Vanessa had posted the cake video.

Caption:

WHEN THE DRAMA QUEEN RUINS HER OWN KID’S PARTY.

But Vanessa had edited the beginning.

The clip started after Maya lifted her face from the cake.

It showed Maya shoving the phone aside.

It showed Richard yelling.

It made everything look chaotic.

Then another video appeared.

Different angle.

Unedited.

Someone else at the party had posted it.

Richard grabbing Maya’s hair.

The impact.

Lily screaming.

Olivia smiling.

Within two hours, the second video had more than three hundred thousand views.

Maya’s stomach twisted.

She did not want to be internet content.

Then a message appeared from an unknown number.

THIS IS THOMAS REED. I WORK FOR JULIAN STERLING. MR. STERLING WILL NOT CONTACT YOU AGAIN WITHOUT PERMISSION. WE ONLY NEED TO CONFIRM WHETHER YOUR MOTHER EVER USED THE NAME EVELYN.

Maya stopped breathing.

Her mother’s name had been Evelyn Carter.

She typed nothing.

Then another message arrived.

NOT CARTER.

WHITMORE.

Maya stared at the screen.

May you like

She had never heard that surname attached to her mother in her life.

Continue to the next part: Julian’s assistant sends Maya a surname she has never heard before, and an old box among her mother’s belongings suddenly becomes far more important than the viral birthday video.
