Documents.
A judge who had read more than Richard expected.
Richard sat beside counsel.
Maya sat beside Dana.
Lily was not in the courtroom.
Good.
Richard requested:
Shared temporary custody.
Unsupervised weekends.
Return to marital home for exchanges.
Maya requested:
Primary residence.
Professionally supervised contact until Richard completed evaluation and parenting intervention.
Neutral exchange location later if appropriate.
The judge watched the full birthday video.
Not Vanessa’s edit.
Then financial records.
Then Richard’s text:
Once I get Lily back, Maya has to negotiate.
His attorney argued it referred to normal divorce negotiation.
Possible.
Then:
If Whitmore money is real, she’s not walking away with everything.
Also could refer property issues.
Not enough alone.
Then Maya testified.
She did not exaggerate.
Richard had never hit Lily.
He had yelled around her.
Humiliated Maya in front of her.
Controlled money.
Shoved Maya twice previously.
Cake assault was first public physical attack.
Why leave?
“Because my daughter was crying and he was laughing.”
Simple.
Then Richard testified.
He apologized.
Admitted cake assault.
Denied intent to injure seriously.
Admitted affair.
Admitted using Maya’s signature image on business paperwork but claimed he believed she had broadly authorized him.
That hurt him.
Then judge asked:
“Did she authorize you to open credit in her name?”
Richard hesitated.
“No.”
There.
Then Olivia’s texts.
Then supervised visit reports.
Richard had behaved mostly appropriately with Lily.
That mattered.
Temporary order:
Maya primary residential parent.
Richard supervised visits twice weekly.
No use of Lily as messenger.
No disparagement.
No discussion of Whitmore money with child.
No direct contact between Richard and Maya except parenting app.
Financial matters separate.
Not permanent.
Reasonable.
Maya exhaled for first time all morning.
Then outside court, reporters waited.
Whitmore connection had become national gossip.
Dana moved Maya through side exit.
Richard’s attorney gave statement.
No drama.
Then Olivia approached parking area.
She stopped ten feet away.
“I’m sorry.”
Maya looked at her.
“For what?”
Olivia swallowed.
“The cake.”
“You didn’t do it.”
“I smiled.”
Yes.
“The loans?”
“I should have asked more.”
“Yes.”
“The Whitmore search?”
Olivia looked ashamed.
“I thought if Richard knew you had somewhere else to go, he would lose Lily.”
Maya stared.
“That was your fear?”
“He loves her.”
“So you wanted me to stay trapped to preserve his access?”
“No.”
But her face said she had not considered Maya’s experience separately.
Then:
“I thought families work things out.”
Maya answered:
“Only when everyone is allowed to leave the room.”
Olivia had no reply.
Then Julian called.
The Orchid Ledger forensic authentication finished.
Genuine.
No alterations.
Trust activation legally available.
Maya’s deadline still ticking.
Then another finding.
Evelyn’s ledger contained a reference to:
ORCHID ANNEX B.
Not in bank box.
Arthur’s certified copy also lacked Annex B.
What was it?
Gregory remembered.
A list of Whitmore voting shares Evelyn surrendered during scandal.
Why matter?
Because the restitution trust valuation assumed one percentage.
Annex B might show a larger one.
If so, Orchid Trust might not be 1.1 billion.
It might have been underfunded.
Maya almost laughed.
“How much more could one person possibly need?”
Julian answered:
“This is not about need.”
“What is it about?”
“Whether the family paid back what it took.”
Then Arthur said something unexpected.
“If Annex B proves we owe more, I want it corrected.”
Maya believed him.
Then Julian added:
“And Richard’s attorney has just subpoenaed trust valuation records.”
