Chapter 8 - Victor’s Debts
Victor had not been broke.
That matters.
He was insolvent in a specific way.
His company owned assets worth millions.
But debt exceeded accessible cash.
The forensic accountant, Laura Kim, explained:
“Hale Ridge Development had approximately thirty one million in property and project interests based on current appraisals, against roughly thirty six million in secured and unsecured obligations.”
Negative equity about five million.
Victor personally guaranteed around eleven point eight million.
If projects recovered, he might survive.
If lenders accelerated, he could lose almost everything.
Why risk murder for fifty million?
Because Victor did not want merely survive.
He wanted erase debt, keep projects, pay Serena, and still be wealthy.

Victor knew.
That is why claim narrative said baby died.
Had Lucas been born alive then died, there would be records.

Victor wanted both gone.

VICTOR:

She continued.
That would destroy her defense.
Then Victor’s public story.
He told investigators I was emotionally unstable after discovering affair.

He reached to stop.
She slipped.
Serena originally corroborated.
Now she flipped.
Defense would say Serena lied to save herself.
Yes.
We needed physical evidence.
My fingernails had Victor’s coat fibers and small skin cells from wrist? He had marks from me clawing.
His coat seized during arrest.
A torn seam exactly where I grabbed.

Snowfall degraded.
But one partial impression showed Victor’s boot behind mine near edge.

Then black-box? Vehicle dashcam.
SUV had parking surveillance that recorded 30-second clips when motion around vehicle, not cliff.
No.
But Victor’s smartwatch recorded elevated heart rate and motion? Could show activity, not intent.
My own phone.
It fell near upper edge before I went over? Maybe from pocket when shoved. Searchers found cracked phone near railing.
Voice memo?
I had opened camera? Could be too convenient. Maybe I had been secretly recording confrontation after seeing insurance docs. That could solve too easily but user likes evidence. Let's seed: I had started audio recording on phone before getting out because Serena's text frightened me. Phone recorded until fall, found under snow. We haven't mentioned. Could now investigators recover. This is believable.
Digital forensic lab recovered partial audio.
Wind.
Victor.
“Fifty million dollars.”
My voice:
“You’re insane.”
Serena:
“Victor, stop.”
Victor:
“Get away from railing.”
Then me:
“You brought me here to kill me.”
Victor:
“You brought yourself.”
Scuffle.
Then his line:
“Worth a lot more than you.”
Could audio capture shove and scream.
Yes.
The phone detached, landing near top, not falling.
This is devastating.
Why didn't police find earlier? Snow.
They found after storm cleared on day 4.
Detective Reed brought transcript.
I listened.
My own scream made me vomit.
Then Victor after:
Serena:
“What if the fall didn’t kill her?”
Victor:
“Then the storm will.”
Exactly.
No defense could turn that into rescue attempt.
Then footsteps.
Engine.
The audio was nearly full proof.
No need rely on Serena alone.
I cried not from relief.
Hearing a man discuss my death while I was below.
Then Adrian said:
“This case is over.”
Detective Reed corrected:
“No. Evidence is strong. A trial is never over before it happens.”
Good.
Power does not guarantee verdict.
Then Victor’s lawyer requested plea discussions.
Already.
But Victor rejected any deal requiring more than ten years.
The state would not.
Trial likely.
Then federal insurance case could add.
Coordination to avoid duplicate punishment but serious.
Then Martin’s lawyer contacted prosecutors.
He wanted proffer too.
The conspiracy was collapsing.
