Chapter 4 - The Funeral For Two Living People

Victor held my memorial at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Chapel outside Aspen.

He wore black.

Serena wore dark gray and stood three rows behind him.

Not beside.

They were still trying to hide affair.

The police did not plant microphones illegally.

They did not need to.

The chapel had security cameras in common areas.

Guests recorded.

One of Victor’s business partners, Colin Hayes, later voluntarily gave detectives a phone video because something Victor said disturbed him.

I watched that video from my hospital bed three days later.

Adrian sat beside me.

Daniel Reeves stood near door.

Detective Reed had warned:

“You do not have to watch.”

I wanted to.

Victor stood near stone patio after service.

Snow behind him.

A whiskey glass in his hand.

He looked exhausted enough to convince strangers he was grieving.

Colin’s video began because someone was recording mountain view.

Then Victor laughed off-camera.

A man asked:

“Are you okay?”

Victor answered:

“What choice do I have?”

Then Serena appeared in edge.

Victor lowered voice.

But microphone caught.

“At least it’s done.”

Serena:

“Don’t talk here.”

Victor:

“They both froze. There’s nothing left to talk about.”

Then another male voice:

“Jesus, Victor.”

Victor laughed.

“That worthless woman got exactly what she deserved.”

My stomach turned.

Adrian reached for tablet.

“Turn it off.”

“No.”

Serena whispered:

“You said nobody would ever find her.”

Victor:

“They won’t.”

Then video ended.

I stared.

There are moments when betrayal becomes too complete for grief.

I did not miss him.

Not then.

I missed the person I had believed.

The Victor who cried when pregnancy test turned positive.

The Victor who rubbed my feet.

The Victor who once drove three hours because I forgot my mother’s necklace at hotel.

Was every kind act fake?

Probably not.

That is harder.

People can love and still become capable of terrible choices when love loses against entitlement, fear, greed, or control.

But whatever Victor had once felt for me had not stopped his hands at cliff.

Then Detective Reed told us evidence from overlook.

Tire tracks matched Victor’s SUV.

Three sets footprints.

Mine.

Victor’s.

Serena’s.

Snow made exact sequence difficult.

A blood smear on railing matched me.

Fabric fibers from Victor’s coat were caught beneath my fingernails.

My broken fingernail fragment embedded in coat seam when police later recovered coat? Not yet. They hadn't arrested him. But search warrant at lodge maybe.

The lodge security system showed all three leaving together.

Victor and Serena returning without me.

Victor told front desk:

“Elena decided to walk back after argument.”

In blizzard.

Nine months pregnant.

The receptionist thought it strange and documented.

Then thirty minutes later Victor called sheriff reporting I had “wandered toward overlook and slipped.”

His story already contradicted itself.

Why did Serena not appear as witness at first?

She later signed insurance affidavit.

But to police Victor initially said Serena had been at lodge.

Security showed otherwise.

Good.

Then phone location.

Victor's remained at overlook thirty eight minutes after estimated fall.

Serena’s too.

They had time to call rescue.

They did not.

Then one message recovered from cloud later after warrant:

SERENA:

I can’t stop thinking she might have been alive.

VICTOR:

Don’t.

SERENA:

You said impact would do it.

VICTOR:

It doesn’t matter now.

That message would become central.

At memorial, Victor also announced a charitable fund in my name.

I almost laughed.

He pledged $100,000.

From what?

His company accounts were near empty.

Then insurance.

The claim remained pending.

Cross Atlantic independent special investigations unit froze all activity.

Adrian formally recused from corporate handling because biological relationship to insured created conflict.

Board formed special committee.

Outside law firm.

Good.

Martin Vale was placed on administrative leave after internal access logs showed he personally overrode underwriting and claim intake.

He denied wrongdoing.

Said policy exception was based on documents provided by broker.

Which broker?

Hale Risk Advisory.

A company controlled by Victor’s cousin? Could be. Maybe Victor used independent broker Thomas Keene, not needed. Better: a licensed broker, Megan Frost, submitted paperwork and later said she relied on Victor. No conspiracy initially. Could be innocent witness.

The forged financial statement showed me as managing member of Marlowe Development Holdings.

Entity existed.

Created eight months earlier in Delaware.

Owner listed:

Elena Hale.

Signature looked mine.

I had never created.

Bank account held $3,700.

A shell.

Victor used it to justify insurance coverage.

How did underwriting miss?

Martin override.

Why would Martin do that?

That was still unknown.

Then Daniel showed internal email.

VICTOR HALE to MARTIN VALE:

As discussed, this is time sensitive. Elena’s trust distribution and family assets support requested face amount.

MARTIN:

Send final certification through Frost. I’ll handle exception.

“Do they know each other?” I asked.

Adrian looked sick.

“Martin told board he’d never met Victor.”

Lie.

Then a calendar entry.

Martin Vale.

Dinner at Aspen Ridge Club.

Victor Hale.

Seven months earlier.

The policy increased six months earlier.

My father rubbed hand over face.

“I promoted him twice.”

I looked.

“This is not your fault.”

He gave bitter smile.

“You’re generous for woman whose husband tried murder through my company.”

“Your company’s controls failed.”

“Yes.”

“That is your responsibility.”

He nodded.

Not defensive.

I respected.

Then:

“Why fifty million?”

Daniel explained preliminary.

Victor owed approximately $11.8 million personally or through guarantees.

A $50m payout after taxes? Life insurance often tax-free, depending. He could clear debt, fund Serena, restart.

But he only needed 12.

Greed.

Then beneficiary.

Victor.

No contingent other.

My trust? Lucas would inherit? But policy beneficiary Victor direct.

He had forged my consent? Life insurance can be bought by spouse with insurable interest and insured's consent usually required. He had forged/obtained signature.

The electronic signature certificate originated from our home IP.

Could have used my laptop.

Maybe I signed without reading? We needed know.

The original $5m policy was genuine.

I had signed.

The amendment raising coverage to $50m used copied signature plus identity verification through a video call.

Who was on video?

Cross Atlantic retained.

A woman.

Dark hair.

Similar profile.

Not me.

Serena.

My skin crawled.

She had impersonated me during remote identity verification.

She wore glasses.

Camera low quality.

She knew my birth date, SSN, address.

Victor had everything.

The examiner asked:

“Mrs. Hale, do you consent to increase?”

Serena said:

“Yes.”

My friend had become me.

Then Adrian’s face went still.

“This was not a claim fraud that started after death.”

“No,” Daniel said.

“It was built months ago.”

The memorial had been act two.

The murder plan began before our son had even reached third trimester.
