Chapter 21 - Ethan Gets a Key

Four years after party, I gave Ethan a Blue Heron key.
Not original brass.
New.
Simple black-headed key.
I placed on table.
He stared.
“What’s this?”
“House key.”
“I know.”
“Do you want it?”
He did not reach immediately.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“What changed?”
“Me.”
He smiled.
“Not therapy answer.”
“It is.”
He picked it up.
Then:
“Any clauses?”
“Yes.”
His smile disappeared.
I laughed.
“Don’t lend. Don’t copy. Don’t give codes. Don’t assume.”
“Fair.”
“Clause Eight.”
“There’s an eight?”
“No.”
He laughed.
I realized this was first time the key felt ordinary.
Not inheritance.
Not evidence.
Not weapon.
A key.
We had not yet had children.
We had decided to try.
Then infertility entered quietly.
A year.
Tests.
No dramatic diagnosis.
Unexplained fertility challenges.
We considered IVF.
Adoption.
No final decision.
This story was not going to fix every part of life.
What mattered was how we handled.
No family pressure.
Judith asked once:
“Any news?”
Ethan said:
“We’ll tell you if there is.”
She stopped.
Good.
Rose sent no advice.
Better.
Blue Heron became our retreat again.
Not my shrine.
Not Bennett family compound.
Ours when I chose.
Mine legally.
May you like
Shared relationally.
That distinction no longer felt hostile.
