Chapter 4

Harrison arrived at the District Attorney's Office before sunrise.

The prosecutor, Allison Grant, was already waiting with two detectives and a digital forensics analyst. A stack of printed text messages covered the conference table.

"We pulled everything from Vanessa's phone under the search warrant," Allison said. "There's more than enough to support the assault charge."

She paused.

"But these messages change everything."

Harrison silently read the first page.

Vanessa: She keeps delaying the divorce.

Unknown Contact: Then make sure she can't.

His jaw tightened.

The next page was worse.

Vanessa: Once she's gone, he'll marry me.

Unknown Contact: Just don't get caught.

There was no direct instruction to kill Khloe.

But the pattern was unmistakable.

Weeks of bitterness.

Weeks of planning.

Weeks of discussing how to remove Khloe from Richard's life.

Allison folded her hands.

"We're trying to identify the unknown number."

"Any leads?"

"It was purchased using a fake identity."

Harrison looked up.

"Find whoever it belongs to."

"We will."

News of Vanessa's arrest spread across the country by lunchtime.

Outside the courthouse, television reporters broadcast live as deputies escorted her into the building wearing handcuffs.

Gone was the confident woman in the crimson designer dress.

She now wore a plain jail uniform.

Camera shutters exploded.

Reporters shouted questions.

"Did you intentionally push Khloe Harrington?"

"Did you plan the attack?"

"Do you regret what happened?"

Vanessa kept her eyes on the ground.

For the first time in years...

She had nothing to say.

At Montgomery Regional Medical Center, Khloe remained under constant observation.

The baby's heartbeat was stronger than the day before, but every contraction sent doctors rushing into the room.

Dr. Lawson smiled gently.

"Your daughter is stubborn."

Khloe managed a weak smile.

"She gets that from my brother."

Harrison laughed quietly.

"I was hoping you'd say you."

A nurse placed a tiny ultrasound photo into Khloe's hand.

She stared at it for several seconds.

"So small."

"So loved."

Harrison pulled a chair closer.

"When she gets older..."

"You'll tell her this story?"

Khloe shook her head.

"No."

"I'll tell her about courage."

"Not hatred."

"I don't want her first lesson in life to be revenge."

Harrison looked at his sister with admiration.

After everything she had endured...

She still refused to let bitterness define her.

Richard spent the next two days trying to reach Khloe.

Every call went unanswered.

Every message remained unread.

Finally, Harrison agreed to meet him.

Not at the hospital.

Not at home.

At a quiet public park across the street from the courthouse.

Richard looked exhausted.

Dark circles surrounded his eyes.

"I don't expect forgiveness."

"You shouldn't."

"I just need to know..."

"Is she alive?"

"Yes."

"And the baby?"

"They're both fighting."

Richard lowered his head.

"I would trade everything I own to change what happened."

Harrison studied him carefully.

"I believe you."

Richard looked surprised.

"But that changes nothing."

Harrison continued.

"You didn't push her."

"No."

"But you built a life where someone believed hurting your wife would make you happy."

Richard felt those words like a punch.

Because they were true.

He had spent months allowing Vanessa to believe she was his future.

He had never imagined how far she would go.

"I failed her."

"You failed both of them."

Harrison stood.

"If Khloe chooses never to see you again..."

"You'll live with that."

Then he walked away.

Richard remained on the bench long after sunset.

Three weeks later, the doctors finally delivered the news everyone had prayed for.

Khloe was stable enough to return home on strict bed rest.

The baby had survived.

The hospital staff applauded quietly as nurses wheeled her toward the exit.

Employees who had cared for her lined the hallway.

Many wiped away tears.

Outside, Harrison helped his sister into the passenger seat.

"You ready?"

Khloe looked toward the bright autumn sky.

"I almost lost everything."

"But I didn't."

She rested a hand over her stomach.

Her daughter kicked gently.

A tiny reminder that hope was still alive.

As the SUV pulled away from the hospital, neither of them noticed a black sedan parked across the street.

Inside sat a middle-aged man wearing sunglasses.

He watched Harrison's vehicle disappear.

Then picked up his phone.

"They discharged her," he said quietly.

A long silence followed.

"No."

He looked toward the hospital one last time.

"She still doesn't know who paid Vanessa."

The call ended.

The sedan drove away unnoticed.

Miles away, Harrison's phone vibrated.

It was Detective Collins.

"We identified the owner of the anonymous phone."

Harrison's grip tightened.

"Who?"

The detective answered with a single name.

One Harrison never expected to hear.

And in that instant...

May you like

He realized the attack on the courthouse steps had never been about jealousy alone.

Someone far more powerful had been hiding behind Vanessa from the very beginning.
