Chapter 3

Three hours later, the red "Surgery in Progress" light above the operating room finally went dark.

Every conversation in the hallway stopped.

Harrison stood before the doors before they had fully opened.

Dr. Emily Lawson, the chief trauma surgeon, removed her surgical mask with exhausted hands.

"We stopped the internal bleeding."

Harrison held his breath.

"And my sister?"

"She's alive."

Relief washed over him for only a moment.

"The baby?"

The doctor's expression softened.

"We were able to stabilize her."

"There was significant placental injury."

"We'll need to monitor them both around the clock."

"It's still too early to say they're completely out of danger."

Harrison closed his eyes.

For the first time all day, his shoulders dropped.

"They're alive."

"Yes."

"They're alive."

Meanwhile...

Across town, Vanessa sat alone inside an interrogation room at the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

The confidence she had worn outside the courthouse had completely disappeared.

A detective entered carrying a laptop.

He sat down without speaking.

Then pressed play.

The courthouse surveillance footage filled the screen.

Camera One showed the entire staircase from above.

Camera Two captured the landing.

Camera Three focused directly on the entrance.

From every angle...

The story was identical.

Khloe never touched Vanessa.

She simply tried to walk past her.

Vanessa deliberately stepped into her path.

Raised both hands.

And shoved her with enough force to send her tumbling backward.

The detective paused the video.

"Would you like to change your statement?"

Vanessa swallowed.

"It..."

"It happened too fast."

"You previously claimed she attacked you."

"I..."

The detective clicked another file.

A slow-motion enhancement.

Every movement became unmistakable.

Khloe's hands never left the folder she was carrying.

Vanessa's fingers visibly pushed against Khloe's shoulders.

There was no accident.

There was no self-defense.

Only violence.

Vanessa's attorney quietly leaned toward her.

"Don't answer another question."

Richard sat outside the intensive maternity unit staring at his wedding ring.

He hadn't moved in nearly an hour.

Every few minutes, he replayed the same image in his mind.

Khloe reaching for the handrail.

Missing.

Falling.

He heard footsteps.

Harrison.

The older man stopped a few feet away.

"I wasn't protecting Vanessa."

Richard spoke first.

"I froze."

"I know."

"You know?"

"I watched the video."

Harrison's voice remained perfectly level.

"You didn't push my sister."

"No."

"But you also didn't catch her."

Richard lowered his head.

"I loved Khloe."

"Then why was another woman standing beside you?"

Silence.

"Why did my sister have to walk into a courthouse alone while carrying your daughter?"

Richard couldn't answer.

Because there wasn't one.

That evening, national media began reporting the incident.

"Pregnant Woman Seriously Injured on Courthouse Steps."

"High-Profile Businessman Present During Violent Assault."

"Court Security Video Under Investigation."

News helicopters circled above the hospital.

Outside, reporters gathered behind police barricades.

The Harrington name had become headline news.

Inside intensive care, Khloe slowly opened her eyes.

Everything hurt.

Machines beeped steadily around her.

She instinctively reached toward her stomach.

A nurse gently took her hand.

"Easy."

"Your baby's heartbeat is stable."

Tears immediately filled Khloe's eyes.

"My daughter..."

"She's still fighting."

"So are you."

Khloe looked around the room.

"My brother?"

"I'll get him."

Seconds later, Harrison entered quietly.

He smiled for the first time all day.

A real smile.

Small.

Relieved.

"You scared me."

Khloe tried to laugh but winced instead.

"I'm sorry."

"You don't apologize for surviving."

She studied his bloodstained suit jacket folded across the visitor's chair.

"You never changed."

He looked down.

"I forgot."

Neither of them spoke for a moment.

Finally Khloe whispered,

"Did she admit it?"

"No."

"She won't have to."

Harrison placed a tablet beside her bed.

He didn't play the recording.

He simply showed her the paused image.

The courthouse camera.

The perfect angle.

The unmistakable shove.

Khloe quietly turned the screen away.

"I don't want to watch it."

"You don't have to."

"Will she go to prison?"

Harrison hesitated.

"I don't know what sentence she'll receive."

"But I know this."

He leaned closer.

"She'll never escape the truth."

Khloe closed her eyes.

For the first time since falling down those marble steps...

She allowed herself to cry.

Not because she was afraid anymore.

But because she finally realized she had survived.

Across the city, Richard unlocked the front door of the mansion he once shared with Khloe.

The house was silent.

Her favorite books were still on the shelves.

The nursery they had painted together remained unfinished.

A tiny stuffed elephant rested inside the crib.

Richard picked it up.

His knees suddenly gave way.

He sat on the nursery floor holding the toy against his chest.

He finally understood what he had destroyed.

Not a marriage.

A family.

His phone vibrated.

It was his company's board chairman.

"We're placing you on immediate administrative leave."

"What?"

"The publicity."

"The investigation."

"The shareholders are demanding action."

Richard leaned his head against the nursery wall.

Everything he had built was collapsing.

His marriage.

His reputation.

His career.

And none of it compared to one terrifying possibility.

If Khloe or their daughter died...

He would have to spend the rest of his life knowing he had stood still while it happened.

Back at the hospital, Harrison stood alone beside the window overlooking the city lights.

His phone rang.

The caller ID displayed the District Attorney's Office.

He answered.

"This is Harrison Cole."

The voice on the other end was calm.

"We've reviewed every witness statement and all three surveillance recordings."

Harrison waited.

"We're filing formal felony charges against Vanessa Kensington first thing tomorrow morning."

He looked through the ICU window at his sleeping sister.

"Good."

"But this isn't over."

The prosecutor's tone grew more serious.

"It definitely isn't."

"We've uncovered something else."

"What?"

"There are text messages."

"Hundreds of them."

"And they suggest this may not have been a crime of passion..."

There was a long pause.

"...it may have been planned."

Harrison's expression hardened.

If that was true...

May you like

Then the fall on the courthouse steps had never been an accident.

It had been the final step in a conspiracy that someone believed would remove Khloe from their lives forever.
