Chapter 1

At 9:16 on a bright Tuesday morning, the white marble steps of the Montgomery County Courthouse glowed beneath the late-summer sun.

Khloe Harrington paused halfway up the staircase, one hand resting instinctively over her seven-month-old baby.

She wasn't there to fight for her marriage anymore.

She was there to end it.

For nearly a year, she had endured Richard Harrington's late nights, unexplained business trips, whispered phone calls, and empty promises. When photographs of him kissing Vanessa Kensington surfaced online, he hadn't apologized.

Instead, he had asked for a divorce.

Khloe agreed immediately.

There was only one condition.

The divorce would be finalized after custody and financial protections for their unborn child were established.

Richard hated that condition.

Vanessa hated it even more.

As Khloe reached the top landing, she saw them waiting.

Richard stood in a tailored black suit, checking his watch as though he were late for a meeting instead of ending a marriage.

Beside him stood Vanessa in a crimson designer dress, wearing the smug smile of someone convinced she had already won.

"You're finally here," Richard said without emotion.

Khloe nodded.

"I brought the documents."

Vanessa laughed softly.

"You still think paperwork matters?"

Khloe ignored her.

"My attorney is already inside."

Vanessa stepped closer.

"So is mine."

Richard sighed impatiently.

"Can we just get this over with?"

Khloe looked directly at the man she had once loved.

"That's exactly why I'm here."

Before anyone could move toward the courthouse doors, Vanessa suddenly blocked Khloe's path.

"You know..."

Vanessa smiled sweetly.

"If you'd just disappeared months ago..."

"...none of this would've been necessary."

Khloe calmly stepped around her.

"I'm done competing for someone who isn't worth winning."

Those words shattered Vanessa's composure.

Her smile vanished.

Without warning—

She shoved Khloe with both hands.

Hard.

Khloe's heel slipped across polished marble.

Time seemed to stop.

She reached desperately for the handrail.

Missed.

Then fell.

One step.

Two.

Five.

Ten.

Her body struck the staircase again and again before crashing onto the courthouse plaza below.

A terrible silence followed.

Then Khloe screamed.

"My baby!"

Blood spread beneath her navy maternity dress.

People froze.

Lawyers dropped briefcases.

Courthouse staff shouted for an ambulance.

Richard stared in complete disbelief.

Vanessa stood motionless at the top of the stairs.

She hadn't expected Khloe to fall that far.

Across the plaza, another figure suddenly appeared.

Harrison Cole.

Khloe's older brother.

One of the most respected trial attorneys in the state.

He had been walking toward the courthouse carrying a leather briefcase when he heard the scream.

The moment he saw his sister lying in blood—

He ran.

"Harrison..."

Khloe whispered weakly as he dropped beside her.

"Harry..."

"Save my baby..."

He gently lifted her head into his lap.

Blood soaked instantly through his charcoal suit.

His hands trembled as he pressed his jacket against the wound.

"Stay with me."

"You hear me?"

"Stay with me."

Khloe clutched his sleeve.

"Our daughter..."

"Please..."

Harrison looked down.

Then slowly raised his eyes toward the staircase.

Richard hadn't moved.

Vanessa looked frozen.

Their eyes met.

Everything inside Harrison changed.

His grief disappeared.

Only absolute control remained.

"You just destroyed your own future."

His voice was quiet.

Calm.

Far more frightening than if he had screamed.

At that exact moment, courthouse deputies rushed toward the staircase.

Witnesses pointed upward.

Several people shouted the same words.

"Check the cameras!"

Vanessa instinctively turned.

Above the courthouse entrance...

A security camera stared directly at the staircase.

Its small red recording light blinked steadily.

Her face drained of color.

"No..."

"The cameras..."

For the first time that morning—

May you like

Vanessa realized every second of the assault had been recorded.

And nothing would ever be the same again.
