Chapter 5 - THE NURSE’S LAST RECORDING

Federal agents reached Sterling Grand Station before the three hour deadline.

Adrian had disabled the elevators, but founder access opened the original service staircase.

I waited inside the command room while tactical officers entered the private suite.

Isabel was gone.

An empty restraint chair stood beside the window.

Blood marked one arm strap, but investigators found no sign that the injury was fatal.

A laptop rested on the desk.

The screen displayed Mara Ellis’s face.

The recording had been scheduled to open when my ownership credentials entered the hotel system.

“Victoria, if you survived long enough to see this, Dr. Hale failed twice.”

Mara looked exhausted.

A bruise darkened her temple.

She explained that the unidentified woman delivered to the crematory was not her.

Mara switched the patient bracelets before Adrian’s people found her.

The woman cremated under my name was another Hale patient named Lydia Marsh.

Lydia had attempted to contact federal authorities about forged death certificates.

Mara was captured later but escaped during transport.

She had been living under false identities, preserving evidence and watching the succession network.

The death record attached to Mara was designed to make us stop searching.

“Is she alive now?” I asked Agent Hayes.

“We do not know.”

Mara’s recording continued.

“Adrian did not create the program. Bianca did not create it. Dr. Hale did not create it.”

She held up the charter for an organization called Continuity House.

The board included probate attorneys, private physicians, financial advisers, and family office managers.

Its purpose was written politely.

Protecting estates during periods of emotional incapacity or disputed succession.

In practice, Continuity House decided which wealthy person could be legally removed when their presence threatened a profitable transfer.

Rebecca Sloan managed operations.

Dr. Hale created medical records.

Adrian brought Sterling properties into the system.

Bianca approached isolated spouses and heirs.

My mother became complicit by approving the original partnership.

Then she discovered the organization had selected me as a future target.

“She tried to dissolve Continuity House,” Mara said. “That is why they killed her.”

The recording opened a financial map.

The missing assets from the seven women moved into a shared reserve account.

Balance:

Eight hundred and sixty million dollars.

The account was scheduled to transfer at midnight.

Receiving owner:

Victoria Sterling.

My identity had been prepared as the final beneficiary.

If investigators uncovered the stolen money, I would appear to control every transfer.

Adrian did not merely want me dead.

He wanted my legal identity to survive as the criminal organizer.

The woman had to disappear.

The signature remained useful.

Agent Hayes froze the account.

A second message appeared.

Transfer blocked.

Emergency owner activated.

Rebecca Sloan.

Mara had predicted that too.

“She keeps a second structure for herself,” the recording said. “When the others become exposed, Rebecca takes the money and leaves them behind.”

Adrian and Bianca were not escaping with a loyal partner.

They were being prepared as scapegoats.

A hotel camera captured a service van leaving the loading dock.

Adrian drove.

Bianca sat beside him.

Isabel was not visible.

Rebecca Sloan drove another vehicle in the opposite direction.

Agents divided their teams.

Charles remained at the estate, desperate for information about his daughter.

I called him.

“We found proof Isabel is alive.”

“Did you find her?”

“Not yet.”

“Then proof is not enough.”

He was right.

Evidence could change a legal record.

It could not hold the hand of the person still missing.

The service van stopped near an abandoned riverfront warehouse.

Adrian exited alone and ran toward a waiting boat.

Police surrounded him.

He surrendered when he realized the river patrol had blocked the channel.

“Where is Isabel?” Agent Hayes asked.

“Rebecca took her.”

“What about Bianca?”

Adrian looked toward the locked rear of the van.

Agents opened it.

Bianca lay inside, unconscious but alive.

A syringe rested beside her.

Rebecca had drugged her and left Adrian to be captured with the mistress inside his vehicle.

When Bianca woke, her first words were not about Adrian.

“She took my father.”

Dr. Julian Hale had disappeared from federal surveillance.

Rebecca now controlled Isabel, the doctor, and the reserve account.

Bianca looked at me.

“She plans to make us confess to everything.”

“You participated in everything.”

“Yes.”

Her answer came without defense.

May you like

“But Rebecca chose the women before we ever met them.”

Continue to the next part: Bianca offers to expose Continuity House after learning its director intends to erase her exactly as they erased Victoria.
