Chapter 3 - THE VAULT BENEATH THE STAIRCASE

The entrance to my mother’s vault was hidden behind the lower marble staircase.

Only Eleanor and I had possessed legal access.

Adrian knew the vault existed, but he had never seen the door.

Yet the security panel now showed my fingerprint authorizing entry.

Agent Hayes ordered every ballroom exit sealed.

Charles led us down a narrow service corridor while security reviewed live feeds.

The vault door stood open.

A woman in a catering uniform was inside, removing files from a steel cabinet.

She froze when agents entered.

Her name was Clara Jensen.

She had worked for Sterling events for eleven years.

Her husband served as Adrian’s driver.

A silicone film covered her thumb.

My fingerprint pattern had been printed across it.

“Who gave you that?” Agent Hayes asked.

Clara looked toward me.

“They said Mrs. Sterling was dead.”

“I am standing here.”

She began crying.

“Mr. Adrian said the woman upstairs was an impostor.”

A small device rested beside the vault scanner.

It contained copies of my fingerprint, voice pattern, and retinal geometry.

The data came from the private clinic.

While I was drugged, Dr. Hale had collected everything required to recreate my identity.

The same copied profile signed company resolutions, opened accounts, and approved the death certificate.

My absence had allowed them to use me more efficiently than my presence ever would.

“What were you told to remove?” Hayes asked.

Clara pointed toward a black case.

Inside were my mother’s final board minutes, medical records, and a handwritten list of seven women.

All were wealthy.

All controlled significant estates or companies.

Each had been declared unstable, missing, or dead after receiving treatment through Hale Legacy Services.

Mara Ellis had placed a red mark beside one name.

Isabel Whitmore.

Charles gripped the cabinet.

His daughter disappeared nine years earlier.

Isabel was thirty two when she entered a private clinic after reporting that her husband controlled her medication.

Three weeks later, Charles was told she died during an accidental overdose.

The body was cremated before he arrived.

Dr. Julian Hale signed the certificate.

Charles looked toward me.

“I joined you because I suspected they harmed Isabel. I never knew there were others.”

The list contained six deaths and one missing person.

The missing woman was Claire Dalton, heiress to a national pharmacy chain.

She vanished six months before my crash.

Her husband later sold her voting shares to a company controlled by Adrian.

Sterling Heritage Group had not merely financed Hale Legacy Services.

It had purchased assets from the families created after the women disappeared.

My company had become the final buyer in an organized succession scheme.

“Did my mother discover this?” I asked.

Charles opened her board minutes.

Eleanor had ordered an independent audit.

She planned to suspend Adrian and terminate every Hale contract.

The meeting was scheduled for the morning after she died.

A medical file showed that Dr. Hale prescribed her a blood thinner two days earlier.

My mother had never needed one.

The dosage found in her stored blood sample could have caused the cerebral hemorrhage described as a stroke.

Bianca’s father had likely killed her.

Adrian benefited.

Bianca received the jewelry.

My disappearance followed.

Federal agents arrested Clara for attempted evidence destruction but offered to protect her family if she cooperated.

She identified the person who delivered my copied biometric profile that evening.

It was not Adrian.

It was Charles Whitmore’s personal assistant, Rebecca Sloan.

Charles turned toward the ballroom camera feed.

Rebecca had worked beside him for twenty years.

She stood near the stage holding his coat.

Then she looked directly into the security camera and smiled.

The ballroom lights went dark.

Emergency systems activated seconds later.

When the chandeliers returned, Adrian was gone.

So was Bianca.

Rebecca Sloan stood alone beside an open service elevator.

A note had been pinned to Charles’s coat.

ISABEL IS ALIVE.
