Chapter 10 - THE BALLROOM BENEATH BOSTON

The Boston address belonged to no public property.
It led beneath an abandoned courthouse connected to old probate tunnels.
Jonathan had created a private ballroom underground.
Marble floors.
Crystal lighting.
A raised stage.
The room imitated the Sterling estate because Continuity House treated inheritance as performance.
Families gathered.
Documents appeared.
An owner vanished.
Then everyone behaved as if the new arrangement had always been legal.
I did not go alone.
Federal agents entered through public tunnels while the independent restitution board froze every account connected to Bianca’s release.
Mara joined the command team.
Charles and Isabel remained under protection.
Marianne brought Eleanor’s counter archive system but retained one of the two activation codes.
No person carried complete authority.
I wore my mother’s earrings into the underground ballroom.
Jonathan waited near the stage.
Time had changed him, but not his posture.
He still stood like the man in old family films who believed rooms arranged themselves around him.
Bianca sat beside him without restraints.
“Did he release you?” I asked.
“He arranged a medical transfer.”
“You escaped.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Someone sent me proof my father kept another patient alive.”
Dr. Hale had claimed Bianca’s mother died when she was a child.
Jonathan told her the woman remained inside Continuity’s oldest facility.
He used family hope exactly as Rebecca had used Isabel against Charles.
“Where is she?” Bianca asked him.
Jonathan smiled.
“After Victoria opens the archive.”
I looked at my father.
“You are still using women to control one another.”
“I am using what matters to people.”
“That is how you describe love when you want it to become leverage.”
His expression tightened.
He held up the death certificate filed that morning.
“Legally, you are dead again.”
“I am standing here.”
“Courts respond to records before they respond to rooms.”
He intended to activate dozens of death certificates simultaneously.
Judges.
Doctors.
Company owners.
Survivors who had taken control of restitution funds.
Continuity no longer needed to hide each disappearance.
It could create administrative chaos large enough that money moved before identities were restored.
Jonathan wanted Eleanor’s counter archive because it contained the only complete map of forged and original records.
With both earrings, he could decide which version remained legal.
“Why did Mother preserve the system?” I asked.
“She understood that destruction would erase real evidence along with false identities.”
“She placed it under no independent control.”
“She planned to give it to you.”
“She taught me why that was dangerous.”
I removed the earrings.
Jonathan extended his hand.
I placed them into two separate evidence containers.
One remained with Agent Hayes.
The other remained with Marianne.
My father stared at me.
“The key requires both.”
“Yes.”
“Then bring them together.”
“No single person will ever hold them again.”
Federal agents entered the ballroom.
Jonathan did not run.
He pressed a remote.
Across the country, death certificates began filing automatically.
Hundreds of alerts appeared on the command screens.
The system had already copied the earring key years earlier.
The exchange was never about access.
It was about bringing me into the room.
Jonathan activated a camera.
My face, voice, posture, and live biometric responses were being captured.
He intended to build a new Victoria profile more accurate than the one Dr. Hale created.
I stepped away from the scanners.
Too late.
IDENTITY MODEL COMPLETE.
Bianca looked toward the screen.
“He said he only needed your consent phrase.”
“I gave no consent.”
Jonathan answered.
“You asked why your mother preserved the system.”
My words had triggered a hidden voice sequence built from childhood recordings.
The phrase was not legal consent.
Continuity would present it as one.
Agent Hayes arrested Jonathan.
Marianne shut down the local servers.
The automated death filings stopped after forty seven names.
Most were corrected within hours.
Three had already triggered financial transfers.
One belonged to Mara Ellis.
Her restitution account moved into a trust controlled by someone named Eleanor Sterling.
My mother’s dead identity had reactivated.
Jonathan laughed as agents restrained him.
“You still think I am the final founder.”
I looked toward the screen.
Eleanor’s profile opened a live video connection.
A silver haired woman sat inside the original Sterling library.
The room had been sealed since my mother’s death.
She wore my mother’s necklace.
Her face remained hidden in shadow.
Bianca stood.
“My mother?”
The woman ignored her.
She addressed me.
“Victoria, Jonathan built the system that erases owners.”
Her voice was not Eleanor’s.
It belonged to Mara Ellis.
Mara stood beside me inside the command room.
Yet the same voice continued from the screen.
Someone had copied the nurse who saved me.
The woman in the library lifted a sealed folder.
“The next stage does not require anyone to die.”
Behind her, a wall displayed hundreds of living identity models.
Mine.
Bianca’s.
Mara’s.
Charles’s.
Isabel’s.
Every survivor who had testified.
“The new system only needs the world to believe the copy more than the person.”
The live feed ended.
My phone received a company notification.
An emergency Sterling board meeting had begun at the estate.
Victoria Sterling was already speaking on screen.
I was still beneath Boston.
The copied version of me addressed the board with perfect calm.
“I have reconsidered the independent trust. Effective immediately, I am restoring full control to the Sterling family.”
Then the false Victoria looked directly into the camera.
“And I am appointing my father as successor.”
Jonathan stopped laughing.
Even he appeared frightened.
“That was not my program.”
The board voted before agents could disconnect the feed.
Across the country, Sterling properties began recognizing the copied Victoria as their legal owner.
The underground ballroom doors locked again.
This time, Jonathan did not possess the controls.
Footsteps approached through the dark tunnel behind us.
Bianca gripped my arm.
“She followed me out of prison.”
“Who?”
Her face lost all color.
May you like
“My mother.”
Continue to the next part: Victoria exposed the man who forged her death, but a copied version of her has now seized the estate while Bianca’s supposedly dead mother approaches through the tunnel.
