Chapter 21 - The House With No Locked Doors

Thomas and I bought a small house outside Columbus.
Not mansion.
Two-story.
Garden.
Wide kitchen.
First week, I changed every door lock myself.
Thomas joked:
“Do you trust locksmith?”
“No.”
Then laughed.
But one rule:
No interior door could be locked from outside.
Obvious.
Yet I checked.
The old house with Luke had bedroom lock reversed once.
He called safety.
I now understood.
Then kitchen.
For years, boiling water scared.
I avoided pasta.
Ridiculous.
Thomas did cooking.
Then one evening he was late.
I wanted tea.
Kettle.
Steam.
My body froze.
I stood ten minutes.
Then turned it off.
Next week tried again.
Eventually normal.
No ceremonial conquest.
Just tea.
Then Emma visited with boyfriend, Noah? Don't name same as lost baby. Use Caleb.
They cooked pasta.
I entered kitchen, smelled steam, did not react.
Healing sometimes revealed itself after.
Then Luke.
He sent me one final letter after supervision ended.
Through Emma.
She asked:
“Do you want?”
I thought.
“Yes.”
Caroline,
I have written apologies until they become another way of asking you to carry my feelings.
Good.
Then:
So this is not apology. It is an accounting.
That word.
He listed.
I controlled email.
I moved money.
I caused Samuel’s loss.
I caused Noah’s loss.
I tried to end pregnancy with Emma.
I burned you.
I attacked you again at hospital.
I lied.
Then:
I did not cause first two miscarriages.
I cannot prove that to you. I understand why you may never believe me.
Then:
I used “son” because it hurt you. I knew it was false.
Then:
I believed keeping you ashamed kept you close.
Then:
I do not expect forgiveness.
Then:
I will not contact again.
He kept.
I never answered.
Was it closure?
No.
But it was accurate.
Then his statement “did not cause first two.”
Could I believe?
Evidence supported no suspicious purchases before second maybe. Pregnancy 2 necklace weird but complications existed before.
I chose:
Unknown.
No need accept his claim as truth.
Then I looked at old pink necklace receipts.
Shredded personal copies.
Medical records kept.
Then one small card I had from pregnancy 2:
Our little girl.
I tore.
Not because baby was boy.
Because Luke wrote lie.
I replaced with:
Daniel.
No gender politics.
Just name.
Then Emma met Caleb? Maybe no need.
At twenty-eight she married? Could provide family closure later. Let's say at 29, she married Caleb, a civil engineer. She invited Luke?
She agonized.
I said:
“Your wedding, your decision.”
She invited him to ceremony but not walk her down aisle.
Thomas sat with me.
Luke sat back row alone/with wife Helen.
No drama.
Emma walked herself.
That was strong.
At reception, Luke approached me? No contact. He stayed away.
I appreciated.
Then Emma later said:
“Was that weird?”
“Yes.”
“Bad?”
“No.”
Multiple family systems in one room.
No one controlled.
Then grandchildren maybe later.
But not needed.
Then Rebecca:
“Your daughter is scary.”
“She gets it from aunt.”
Good.
Then Thomas asked:
“Would you have stayed married to Luke if he never poisoned?”
I thought.
“No.”
Control alone would eventually break.
Maybe.
Hard to know.
Then:
“Do you ever wish we met sooner?”
“No.”
“Rude.”
“Then I wouldn't have Emma.”
He nodded.
No trauma-as-destiny, but life.
Then I corrected:
May you like
“I wish harm didn't happen. I don't need to choose alternate timeline.”
Good.
