Chapter 14 - Luke Takes the Stand

Luke wore a gray suit.
He looked like man I married.
That frightened me.
Not monster.
Familiar.
He began:
“I loved Caroline.”
Then:
“I still love her.”
My stomach twisted.
He admitted financial secrecy.
“I was ashamed business was failing.”
He admitted moving trust funds.
“I intended repay.”
He admitted controlling email.
“I thought Rebecca was toxic.”
He admitted second hospital incident partly.
“I was angry. I carried hot water. Nurse rushed me. I shouldn't have.”
But denied intention to burn me.
Then home.
“The pot slipped.”
Then supplements.
He admitted purchasing prescription medication.
“For myself.”
Why hidden mailbox?
“Privacy.”
Why mixed into powder?
“I didn't.”
Why residue on grinder?
He used grinder personally.
Why current blood?
“She must have taken.”
My body went cold.
He blamed me.
Then pregnancy 4 sample.
“She could have taken then too.”
Did I know medication?
“No.”
Why would I take?
“She was desperate to stay pregnant. Maybe she thought it helped.”
Nonsense but theory.
Then genetic sex.
He admitted knowing all three were male.
Why tell Caroline girls?
He looked down.
“After second miscarriage, she said losing boy would be harder because I wanted son.”
I never said.
“I lied to protect her.”
Protect.
Then pink necklaces.
“Symbolic, not sex.”
Why call our little girls?
“Something we said privately.”
No.
Then voice memo.
Let next one stick.
He said it meant hoping.
Then “Need one more year.”
Finances.
He feared trust audit.
He admitted.
But not poisoning.
Then cross.
Marcus:
“You knew first live birth triggered accounting.”
“Yes.”
“You had moved hundreds thousands.”
“Yes.”
“Without telling Caroline.”
“Yes.”
“You needed time.”
“Yes.”
“Pregnancy four threatened that.”
“I was going to refinance.”
“Then pregnancy ended.”
“Yes.”
“You wrote ‘trust delayed.’”
“Yes.”
“Your reaction.”
“Financial note, not celebration.”
Then:
“You purchased compound before that loss.”
“For myself.”
“Same compound later found in wife’s blood.”
“Yes.”
“In powder.”
“Yes.”
“In pill grinder.”
“Yes.”
“You say coincidence.”
“I say she may have used.”
Then:
“Did Caroline know you bought it?”
“No.”
“Why would she know how to obtain from locked desk?”
“She knew code.”
Did I? No.
Evidence showed office keypad code changed weekly? Luke claimed.
Then:
“Did you tell police she used medication?”
“Not immediately.”
“When first?”
“After toxicology.”
So theory arose after.
Then current.
“You ordered more compound three weeks before burn.”
“Yes.”
“For yourself?”
“Yes.”
“Medical records show no condition requiring it.”
“My doctor off-label.”
No doctor.
Telehealth source under alias.
Then hot water.
“You turned indoor camera privacy mode six minutes before Caroline burned.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Argument.”
“You wanted privacy.”
“Yes.”
“Then pot slipped.”
“Yes.”
“Then at hospital you obtained hot water and approached her again.”
“I wanted to scare.”
There.
“Why?”
“She accused me.”
“Of hurting her.”
“Yes.”
“You shouted she was supposed give son.”
“I was angry.”
“While knowing three prior were sons.”
“Yes.”
“So that accusation was false.”
“Yes.”
“Why use it?”
Luke paused.
“I knew it hurt her.”
Silence.
Then threat.
“I’ll finish you.”
“What did you mean?”
“I was furious.”
“Finish what?”
“No idea.”
Then Mason call.
Throw pregnancy stuff.
“I thought hospital would not need.”
Why?
“Baby might come.”
But prenatal supplements still could be needed postpartum? weak.
Then pink necklace ordered before attack.
“Birth gift.”
Then note:
Baby trigger unavoidable if 34+.
He claimed financial planning.
Then new POA draft replacing Rebecca.
“Wanted family peace.”
Marcus laughed? Prosecutors don't.
Then:
“Did Caroline know?”
“No.”
Again.
Everything important happened without me knowing.
Then Luke’s final statement:
“I made terrible financial decisions. I controlled too much. I scared my wife. But I did not poison her and I did not cause miscarriage.”
That was defense.
Could jury believe?
Yes.
Some parts plausible.
Then experts.
Defense toxicologist attacked chain of old serum.
Sample stored appropriate.
No contamination evidence.
Still causation not absolute.
Defense OB said miscarriages happen in chromosomally normal pregnancies.
True.
Then financial expert said child-trust motive may be overdrawn because Luke could have restored later.
Also true.
The case would turn on combined evidence.
Then closing.
Marcus:
“No single piece answers everything. Look at the pattern that only makes sense when you stop accepting Luke Mercer’s explanations one at a time.”
Defense:
“Patterns are not substitutes for proof.”
Correct.
Then jury left.
I went home to Emma.
She was twenty months.
She shouted:
“Mommy!”
I picked her up carefully.
Scars still pulled.
Three days.
No verdict.
Then fourth day.
May you like
The court called.
Jury had returned.
