Chapter 5 - The Nurse Who Copied the Truth

Megan’s sister was named Melissa Brooks.

She had worked in medical records at Mercer Reproductive Health for four years.

The clinic claimed she resigned and moved to Arizona.

Megan had received one message.

I need distance. Do not look for me.

Then the phone disconnected.

“I knew it did not sound like her,” Megan said. “I let myself believe it because the alternative was worse.”

The sentence belonged to all of us.

I believed Hannah stopped caring.

Hannah believed Luke’s false court warning.

Alan believed privacy protected patients.

Megan believed distance explained disappearance.

People accepted the version that allowed the day to continue.

Detective Hayes requested Melissa’s employment file.

The resignation letter contained a copied signature.

Her final paycheck entered an account that was emptied by cashier’s checks.

The checks were collected by a masked woman using Melissa’s identification.

The clinic security footage had been deleted.

A backup remained in the hidden storage room.

Melissa appeared inside Nathan Mercer’s office holding my file.

“You removed the injury note again,” she said.

Mercer closed the door.

“The family requested privacy.”

“She said Luke hit her.”

“She withdrew that statement.”

“While he stood beside her.”

Mercer lowered his voice.

“Do you want this clinic closed?”

“I want the patient protected.”

“You want to destroy every employee here because one marriage is ugly.”

The recording ended.

Melissa had challenged him.

The hidden envelope proved she copied documents afterward.

Where had she gone?

Police searched her former apartment again.

The landlord had stored one box she left behind.

Inside was a journal.

Pregnant patient arrives with bruises. Husband answers every question.

Fetal sex hidden from patient.

Evelyn pays after loss.

Nathan orders laboratory note removed.

The final entry read:

I copied everything. If they find out, Megan will know where to look.

The next page had been torn out.

Forensic lighting recovered two words from the pressure marks.

Lake house.

Evelyn owned a lake house two hours north.

Police obtained a warrant.

The house appeared empty.

A locked blue cabinet stood inside the basement.

It contained clinic records, copied identification cards, and Melissa’s laptop.

A narrow space behind the cabinet contained blankets, canned food, and handwritten notes.

Someone had lived there.

One note read:

Laura brings food. She will not look at me.

Laura Mills was Evelyn’s personal assistant.

Another note read:

Mercer says Caroline is pregnant again. He promises Luke will behave because the baby is male.

The final note:

Luke has started hurting her again. I need to get the original records out.

Melissa had been held there.

She may have escaped.

She may have returned to the clinic long enough to hide evidence in my hospital bag.

Megan recognized the handwriting.

“She was alive during this pregnancy.”

Detective Hayes asked who Laura Mills was.

Evelyn’s assistant managed appointments, property access, and family travel. She had keys to the lake house and clinic.

Police found Laura at her apartment.

She admitted delivering food.

“Why was Melissa inside the basement?” Hayes asked.

“Evelyn said she was unstable and needed privacy.”

“Was the door locked?”

Laura looked down.

“Yes.”

“Could Melissa leave?”

“No.”

“Why did you not call police?”

“I would lose everything.”

“What did Evelyn promise you?”

“A house.”

Laura had received a property transfer agreement that activated after the male heir trust moved into family control.

She remained silent because the child’s birth promised her financial security.

She claimed she never knew about the medication or boiling water.

She knew a woman was being confined.

That choice carried its own responsibility.

Laura said Melissa escaped three months earlier.

She stole a clinic access badge and disappeared.

Evelyn ordered everyone to claim she moved to Arizona.

“Where did Melissa go?”

“I do not know.”

“Did Nathan Mercer know?”

“Yes.”

“Did Luke?”

“Yes.”

They were not hiding one missing employee.

They were hunting a witness.

The financial investigation uncovered one hundred thousand dollar payments after each pregnancy loss.

Mercer called them crisis containment.

Another payment of two hundred fifty thousand dollars followed the male fetal confirmation.

Successful succession management.

The money came from Evelyn’s family trust.

Luke received separate transfers after every clinic report was corrected.

The losses made him appear sympathetic to relatives while hiding the violence.

He used grief as reputation.

Dr. Carter reviewed the oldest available pathology slides.

The first male pregnancy had been developing normally before physical trauma.

The second involved the hidden medication.

The third file remained incomplete.

The earliest female pregnancy showed medication exposure within days of the positive test.

Luke had told me I had never been pregnant.

Someone ended that pregnancy before I understood it existed.

“Did Luke give me the medication then too?” I asked.

“We do not know,” Dr. Carter said.

“The prescription source?”

“An old Mercer clinic account under Andrew Hayes.”

Luke’s older brother.

I had been told Andrew died ten years earlier in a motorcycle fire.

No DNA identification had been completed.

His body had been identified by Evelyn.

The pharmacy account continued ordering medication for six years after his reported death.

Someone was using his name.

Or Andrew was alive.

Detective Hayes avoided conclusions.

“A continued account does not prove the person survived.”

Megan opened Melissa’s laptop.

One video remained undeleted.

Melissa sat inside a car.

“If Megan sees this, Evelyn and Nathan are changing Caroline Hayes’s records. Luke knows. There is another man handling the medication. They call him Andrew.”

She looked behind her.

“I am taking the original files to Samuel Hayes.”

Samuel was Luke’s father.

He died the previous year from a reported heart attack.

The video continued.

“Samuel says he will remove Luke from the trust and close Mercer Reproductive Health.”

A second video was recorded two days later.

Melissa’s face looked frightened.

“Samuel is dead. Evelyn says it was natural. Nathan says I am next.”

The recording stopped.

Samuel’s death had occurred one week after he threatened the trust.

The doctor who signed his death certificate was Nathan Mercer.

Continue to the next part: Melissa’s recording forces investigators to reopen Samuel Hayes’s death and search for the man operating under Andrew’s identity.
