Chapter 8 - My Mother’s Secret

Mom said the first payment happened after Christmas the previous year.

Brandon called her.

Not Dad.

“He said you were stressed.”

“About what?”

“Money.”

“I was not.”

“I know that now.”

“What did he ask?”

“A loan.”

“How much?”

“A thousand.”

“And then?”

“Another.”

“Every month?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He said his business cash flow was temporary.”

“Did Dad know?”

“No.”

My parents had each been secretly financing my husband.

Separately.

That almost felt absurd.

“You hid nine thousand dollars from Dad?”

“It came from my personal savings.”

“That isn’t the point.”

“I know.”

“Why Brandon?”

She whispered:

“Because he said if I didn’t help, you would find out Richard had loaned him fifty.”

My stomach turned.

“What?”

“He knew I didn’t know at first. Then I found out.”

“Brandon told you?”

“Yes.”

“He used Dad’s secret to get money from you?”

“Yes.”

There.

Brandon had mapped the weakness in my family.

Dad’s shame.

Mom’s avoidance.

My desire to keep peace.

He did not need elaborate manipulation.

He only needed to tell each person the secret they were protecting depended on silence.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Mom cried.

“I was afraid everything would explode.”

“And what did you think happened when he hit me?”

Silence.

“Mom.”

“I knew it already had.”

That answer hurt.

“Why leave?”

“Your father said go.”

“You could have stayed.”

“I know.”

“You could have told him no.”

“I know.”

“You could have come back after.”

“I sat in the car.”

My chest tightened.

“What?”

“After we left.”

“Where?”

“Across the street.”

“For how long?”

“Maybe twenty minutes.”

I stopped breathing.

Samantha arrived thirty minutes later.

My mother had sat outside while I was inside with Brandon.

“What were you doing?”

“Trying to decide.”

“Whether I deserved help?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Whether I was strong enough to go against your father.”

There it was.

At sixty, my mother still described basic moral action as rebellion against Richard.

“Did you see Samantha?”

“Yes.”

My heart stopped.

“You saw her go inside?”

“Yes.”

“And then?”

“I left.”

“Why?”

“I thought you had someone.”

Someone.

Any woman.

Not Mom.

Enough.

I did not yell.

“I need space.”

“Chloe, please.”

“I need space.”

She sobbed.

“I have something for you.”

“What?”

“Messages.”

“From Brandon?”

“Yes.”

“He deleted some from my phone when we were at the apartment.”

“How?”

“He asked to borrow it months ago when his battery died. I didn’t know until later.”

“What messages?”

“I took screenshots before he deleted everything.”

I closed eyes.

“Send them to Amelia.”

“Not me?”

“Amelia.”

“Okay.”

The screenshots arrived that evening.

They showed Brandon asking Mom for money.

Then:

Brandon:

Chloe can’t know. She overreacts.

Mom:

I hate lying.

Brandon:

Then don’t ask questions.

Later:

Mom:

She looks unhappy.

Brandon:

She likes being a victim.

Mom:

Has something happened?

Brandon:

No. She bruises easily.

My mother had suspected.

Months before the Sunday groceries.

Another message:

Mom:

If you ever hurt her, I will take her home.

Brandon:

Relax, Elaine.

The promise existed.

She did not keep it.

Then the last exchange, two days before I left:

Brandon:

If she says anything Sunday, Richard needs to keep his mouth shut. I’m almost clear on debt.

Mom:

What happened?

Brandon:

Nothing.

Mom:

Brandon.

No answer.

She knew enough to arrive worried.

She saw my face.

And left.

That did not make her criminal.

It made her failure clearer.

Then one screenshot held a new detail.

Brandon:

Once Chloe signs the refinance, everyone gets paid back.

Mom:

What refinance?

Brandon:

Ask Richard.

I stared.

I had never agreed to refinance anything.

Amelia immediately called Dad’s lawyer.

There was another document.

Not yet submitted.

A planned refinance of our jointly leased? Wait apartment isn't owned. Need asset. We need maybe we own a condo? Let's revise: they live in a modern apartment, perhaps condo owned jointly. The video says modern apartment, not lease necessarily. Let's establish they own condominium. Earlier I called lease jointly. Oops. We wrote "apartment leased jointly" in Ch5 and later. Can't now change. Could refinance a separate asset, like my inherited brokerage? Better "refinance" refers Brandon's business debt under new personal line, not property. Maybe planned refinance of commercial loan using my brokerage account. Let's make "refinance" of company line, not mortgage. Good.

I asked Amelia:

“What refinance?”

She said:

“We’re finding out.”

The four months I thought I had been planning only my exit were beginning to reveal a second timeline.

Brandon had been planning too.
