Chapter 24 - Four Years Later

Four years after Brandon hit me, I was thirty eight.
My life was boring.
I loved that.
Work.
Gym.
Dinner with Samantha.
Sunday soup with Mom twice a month.
Emails with Dad.
Therapy less often.
No husband.
No dramatic romance replacing him.
I dated once.
Stopped.
Not because damaged.
Because the man chewed loudly and talked about crypto for forty minutes.
Standards.
Brandon had been released under supervision.
He lived in Duluth.
Worked for a warehouse logistics company.
No ownership.
Continued restitution.
No contact violations.
No messages.
No surprise appearance.
No secret revenge plan.
That mattered.
I learned recovery is sometimes waiting for the disaster that never comes.
The protective order eventually expired after counsel and I assessed risk.
I still had ordinary security.
Not fear architecture.
Brandon knew contacting me could create legal consequences and apparently chose not to.
Fine.
Samantha married a woman named Julia.
I gave a toast.
Short.
No domestic abuse story.
Their wedding belonged to them.
Mom attended.
Dad did too.
They sat separately.
Civil.
No reunion.
Good.
One night after wedding, Mom said:
“You look happy.”
“I am.”
“Do you ever wish you’d left sooner?”
“Yes.”
She looked guilty.
I continued:
“But I don’t live backward.”
That was therapy sentence.
Useful.
Then:
“Do you wish you came back into apartment?”
She cried.
“Yes.”
“Good.”
She looked confused.
“I need you to wish that. I don’t need you to punish yourself every day.”
May you like
She nodded.
Maybe we were finally learning difference.
