Chapter 21 - The Letter From Brandon

Two years after I left, Brandon sent a letter through approved legal channel.
The no contact order allowed communications only through counsel when necessary, so his attorney asked before forwarding.
I said yes.
One letter.
Chloe,
I used to think apologizing meant asking you to understand why I did things.
Then:
That is not an apology.
Better.
He wrote about treatment.
Gambling recovery.
Anger program.
No demand.
No “we belong together.”
Then:
I forged your consent because debt made you easier to control. I told myself I was saving my business. The email proved I knew the truth before anyone else did.
He referred to:
Once Chloe is tied into restructuring, she won’t walk.
Then:
I hit you because you stopped cooperating with the version of marriage I wanted.
I read.
No tears.
At bottom:
I do not ask you to answer.
I didn’t.
I filed letter with other legal documents.
Not memory box.
Not bedside drawer.
Records.
He would eventually be released.
The protection order could be renewed or replaced depending circumstances.
I met Amelia.
“Are you afraid?”
“Less.”
“Do you want renewed protection when current term ends?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because less afraid isn’t same as wanting contact.”
Good.
Court extended protections based on history and continued need, with terms appropriate under law.
Brandon did not contest.
That surprised me.
Maybe treatment.
Maybe legal advice.
May you like
Doesn’t matter.
A boundary respected still counts.
