Chapter 8 - RYAN’S DOCTOR
Dr. Steven Hale cooperated only after proper consent and legal process.
He could not disclose Ryan’s therapy details freely.
But he could answer one critical question.
“Have you ever evaluated Emma Collins?”
“No.”
“Have you ever declared her incapacitated?”
“No.”
“Did you authorize Ryan to represent that you had?”
“Absolutely not.”
Then records showed Ryan had asked general questions during treatment.
How does a family handle someone making irrational financial decisions?
When is conservatorship appropriate?
Can pregnancy anxiety impair capacity?
General questions.
A doctor answering hypotheticals is not endorsement.
Ryan turned them into authority.
Same pattern.
Then Dr. Hale’s office received an email from Ryan:
Could you write something saying Emma needs temporary financial help?
The doctor refused.
He recommended couples counseling only if safe and individual support.
Ryan never told me.
Then Ryan canceled his next appointment.
Why was he seeing a psychiatrist?
His attorney objected to relevance.

We did not need diagnosis to understand conduct.
No mental health label would explain or excuse assault.
Then police searched Ryan’s home office.

Pregnancy notes.

Things Emma forgets.
Keys.
Laundry timer.
Appointment time.
Password.
Milk.
Normal mistakes.
Then:
Witnesses.
Lauren.
Neighbor Sarah.
Dr. Patel.
Ryan had been building a capacity case like litigation.
Then another section:
Behavioral incidents.
Emma cried after ultrasound.
Emma left dinner suddenly.
Emma locked bathroom door.
Emma refused joint account.
Financial disagreement had been translated into symptoms.
Then one page:

Temporary control until baby arrives.
Why until baby arrives?
That phrase bothered Detective Ellis.

When my child was born alive, the trust’s descendant provisions became practically undeniable.
The baby would have direct future interests.
North County would become even less willing to place anything under Ryan’s personal control.
Pregnancy created a deadline.
Then my house trust.
If I died while pregnant, unborn child could inherit if born alive.
If I became incapacitated, Lauren acted.
Ryan’s position weakened both ways.
So what changed at birth?

He wanted control before outside fiduciaries entered.
Then Detective Ellis found a draft email from Ryan to Lauren.
After the birth, Mom’s trust people will make everything impossible.

He knew.
Then:
I need Emma to sign before delivery.
Long term plan.
The bathroom assault was not born overnight.
Then a new piece.
Ryan had booked a mobile notary to come to the house at 9 p.m.
Tonight.
After the assault began.
The notary confirmed.
Purpose described:
Family property restructuring.
Client:
Ryan Collins.
She had canceled after receiving a police alert from Ryan saying “family emergency.”
So Ryan intended:
Pressure me.
Get documents signed.
Have notary witness.
If I resisted, he would manipulate.
If I complied out of fear, the documents might look voluntary.
Then the death worksheet date being tonight mattered more.
The entire transaction was scheduled around one evening.
Why?
Because tomorrow I would sign my new estate plan.
