Chapter 5 - HE TURNED OFF THE CAMERAS

Ryan told police the cameras went offline because the internet failed.

Router logs disagreed.

At 7:16 p.m., he opened the security app.

Selected:

PRIVACY MODE.

All interior cameras disabled.

Front exterior remained active until 7:39.

Then off.

The assault began shortly after eight.

Why privacy mode?

Ryan’s statement:

“We were having a personal conversation.”

That was not enough.

Detective Ellis asked why he had never used privacy mode during previous arguments.

No answer.

Then the audio recordings from my backup phone.

Not just tonight.

Three weeks.

I had recorded only when I felt unsafe.

Never hidden cameras.

Audio.

Ryan:

You are not taking my child anywhere.

Another night:

Your mother’s house became ours when you married me.

Another:

If you talk to Lauren about us again, I’ll make sure she thinks you’re losing it.

Then one recording that made me stop.

RYAN:

You don’t even know what you signed when your mom died.

ME:

What are you talking about?

RYAN:

Exactly.

At the time, I thought he was mocking me.

Now it sounded different.

“What did I sign when Mom died?”

Lauren looked at me.

Probate documents.

Transfer deed.

Investment account beneficiary receipt.

A family trust release.

My mother, Elaine Mercer, had died suddenly from an aneurysm four years earlier.

She left the house to me.

The investment account came from a trust my grandfather created.

I signed paperwork with attorney:

Julian Hart.

Retired now.

Could there be more?

Detective Ellis requested records with my consent.

Then Ryan’s company files revealed he had searched:

Emma Collins inheritance.

Mercer family trust.

Elaine Mercer probate.

Three months earlier.

Why?

Maybe financial desperation.

Then he downloaded a county deed showing my house came through:

Mercer Residential Trust.

Not directly from my mother’s probate.

I had forgotten.

Mom had placed the property into a trust years earlier.

I became sole beneficiary and trustee after her death.

Then an attached provision.

If I died before age thirty without living children, remaining trust property went to:

Mercer Family Foundation.

Not Ryan.

My stomach loosened slightly.

He would not automatically get the house.

But I was pregnant.

A child in utero could have rights depending law and trust definitions.

The trust included descendants conceived before death if later born alive.

So my baby had rights.

Ryan’s plan to simply inherit the house was legally weaker than he thought.

Then another provision.

If I became incapacitated before thirty, successor trustee:

Lauren Mercer.

My sister.

Not Ryan.

That was even worse for him.

He could not control the house through incapacity either.

Unless he replaced the trust documents.

Then Detective Ellis pulled out the forged property transfer.

It did not simply transfer my personal title.

It contained:

Trustee Certification.

Emma Collins, as current trustee of Mercer Residential Trust, voluntarily transfers trust property into Collins Family Asset LLC.

If my signature were genuine, the trust protection could be stripped before death.

That was why Ryan needed me alive long enough to sign.

Then maybe death afterward.

I hated where my mind went.

But the sequence made sense.

First:

Get my signature transferring house.

Add him to accounts.

Maybe obtain financial power.

Then if I died, those assets sat closer to him.

The death worksheet’s date was tonight.

Too soon.

Unless the signatures were supposed to happen first.

Ryan’s words:

Sign it now.

Tell her you slipped.

Maybe the assault was not intended to kill me.

Maybe intended to frighten me into signatures.

Then what was Route 17?

A later plan?

A contingency?

Caleb knew.

Detective Ellis requested a warrant for his office.

Before that happened, Caleb hired counsel and offered voluntary document preservation.

Smart.

His lawyer provided emails.

One subject:

CONTINGENCY ESTATE SCENARIO.

Attachment:

Emma death worksheet.

Caleb wrote to an employee:

Prepare sample claim sequence so Ryan understands exposure if spouse dies before restructuring.

Sample.

A financial planning scenario?

Maybe.

The employee prefilled a death worksheet using my information.

Why tonight’s date?

Caleb said the analyst used the next scheduled signing date as hypothetical date.

Signing date:

Tonight.

So the horrifying death certificate might have originated as a crude scenario document, not a murder plan.

Then why Route 17?

Caleb did not know.

His original draft location field was blank.

Somebody edited after leaving his office.

Who?

Metadata showed:

R. COLLINS.

Ryan.

My husband had opened the file.

He had changed location.

Then saved.

He knew the page existed.

His hallway statement had been another lie.

Continue to the next part: Metadata proves Ryan personally edited the death worksheet and added the remote highway location, destroying his claim that he had never seen the page.
