Chapter 11 - HE CALLED THE FUNERAL HOME

Ryan’s explanation:
“I was researching Caleb’s death claim scenario.”
Nobody had asked him to.
Caleb had not told him to contact a funeral home.
Then the call duration.
Fourteen minutes.
Questions included:
Death registration timelines.
Transportation between counties.
Certified copies.
How spouses obtain records.
Nothing about cremation.
Nothing about hiding a body.
Administrative questions.
Still chilling because I was alive.
Then Ryan called the insurance broker that same afternoon.
“How fast do beneficiaries get paid?”
Owen Pierce answered:
Depends on circumstances, review, documentation.
Ryan asked:
“What if death is accidental?”
Owen explained claims get investigated.
Not immediate.
Then:
“Does pregnancy change anything?”
Owen said he did not know.
He later documented the call because it felt unusual.
Why did he continue policy process?
He thought Ryan was anxious new father doing estate planning.
That was his explanation.
Then Ryan contacted my bank.
Asked survivor account procedures.
Bank refused without authorization.
Three systems.
Funeral.
Insurance.
Bank.
He had been rehearsing what happens after my death.
Could be financial planning.
Could be darker.
Combined with assault, Route 17, suitcase, and missing person form, it looked terrible.
Then he sent me a letter through attorneys.
I did not need to read.
I did.
Emma,
I know what everything looks like.
I almost stopped there.
Then:
I was scared you were leaving and taking the baby.
I thought if I controlled the house and money you would have to negotiate with me instead of disappearing.
There.
Control.
Then:
The death worksheet was never a plan to kill you.
I edited it because Caleb’s scenario made me realize how exposed I would be if something happened to you.
Why Route 17?
He wrote:
Because that was the first place I imagined when I thought about you leaving.
Not an answer.
Then:
I called the funeral home because I was trying to understand the policy.
Still.
Then:
I packed the suitcase because I wanted Lauren to believe you left if you took the real bag.
I stopped.
He admitted that.
Why?
So he could buy time.
If I escaped, he wanted family not to search immediately.
Why?
“So I could find you first.”
My skin crawled.
He did not say kill.
He said find.
That was enough.
Then:
I turned off cameras because I intended to scare you into signing. I did not plan what happened in the bathroom.
As though violence becomes less violent when improvised.
Then:
I am responsible for hurting you.
The first clean sentence.
No “but.”
Then:
I did not create the second policy amendment.
What second amendment?
I called Detective Ellis.
She had not told me yet because verification was underway.
Three days before assault, someone attempted to increase my life insurance coverage.
From $2.4 million to:
$5 million.
Ryan’s electronic signature as owner.
My forged consent.
Submitted through broker portal.
Owen Pierce denied filing.
Caleb denied.
Ryan denied.
Who submitted?
Login:
Owen Pierce agent credentials.
From an IP address not associated with his office.
His account had been compromised.
Now we had a document Ryan might genuinely not have created.
Then device fingerprint.
A Windows laptop.
Browser name:
MERCER ADMIN.
Mercer.
My mother’s surname.
I stared.
Who had a computer named Mercer Admin?
Lauren?
No.
Me?
No.
My late mother’s estate office?
Possibly.
Then my old attorney, Julian Hart, called.
“Emma.”
“What?”
“The Mercer family office had a computer named MERCER ADMIN.”
Family office?
I had never known we had one.
It was dissolved after my mother died.
Who took its equipment?
Julian did not know.
Then he said:
“There’s something your mother never told you about the insurance planning.”
My heart sank.
“Of course there is.”
The original policy idea had not begun with Ryan.
My mother had once planned a large policy on me years before I met him.
May you like
Why?
Continue to the next part: Emma learns her mother had created an old insurance and estate plan around her long before Ryan entered her life, and one of the retired family office computers may still be active.
