Chapter 5 - Brooke’s Original Video

Brooke called me five days after the dinner.
Not through lawyers.
Direct.
I stared at the screen until it stopped.
Then she texted.
I need to talk before Evan makes me the criminal.
I forwarded to Hannah.
Her answer:
Do not meet. Tell her counsel to contact me.
Brooke did not have counsel yet.
By that evening she did.
Attorney Nina Wallace contacted Hannah.
Brooke wanted to provide information.
Not immunity.
Not yet.
Information.
We agreed to a lawyer-to-lawyer meeting, with police notified separately if evidence involved criminal conduct.
Brooke looked different without a family audience.
No sharp smile.
No phone held like weapon.
She sat across from me at Hannah’s conference table.
Nina began:
“My client understands she participated in conduct she now regrets.”
I said nothing.
Brooke looked at me.
“I’m sorry about dinner.”
I felt nothing.
“For which part?”
Her eyes dropped.
“Recording.”
“Only that?”
“Laughing.”
“Only that?”
She swallowed.
“Going through your house afterward.”
“And?”
“Helping Evan.”
There.
Hannah leaned forward.
“Helping him with what?”
Brooke looked at Nina.
Nina nodded.
“The collateral package.”
My stomach tightened.
“What did you do?”
“Evan sent me a copy of the signature page from your old refinance.”
I almost stopped breathing.
“How did he get it?”
“Your office.”
The moved drawers.
The missing order.
The camera.
“Then?”
“He asked me to drop your signature into a PDF.”
I stared.
“Why?”
“He said you had already agreed but you were traveling and the bank deadline was stupid.”
“I was not traveling.”
“I know that now.”
“You knew then.”
Brooke cried.
“No. I knew you were angry about the family business. I thought you were making him wait.”
“Did you think I authorized the lien?”
She hesitated too long.
“No.”
Honest.
Ugly.
“What did you think?”
“That you’d eventually sign.”
“After you forged me.”
“Yes.”
Hannah stopped me from continuing.
She asked:
“Who arranged notarization?”
“Me.”
“Melanie?”
“Yes.”
“What did you tell her?”
“That Claire had signed and just couldn’t appear.”
“Did Melanie know Claire wasn’t present?”
“Yes.”
That ended her notary defense.
Brooke continued.
“Evan said the bank would require ratification at closing anyway, so the recorded document was just to keep the file moving.”
“Then why humiliation dinner?” Hannah asked.
Brooke closed eyes.
“Diane.”
“What about Diane?”
“She said Claire needed to stop thinking no was final.”
My skin went cold.
The basin.
Kneel.
Wash his feet.
Not random cruelty.
A demonstration.
If I could be broken publicly, maybe I would sign privately next morning.
Brooke said:
“Mom wanted everyone there because she thought you cared what people thought.”
I laughed once.
“That’s what she cared about.”
“Yes.”
“Did Evan agree?”
“Yes.”
Then Brooke took out her phone.
“My original video is longer than what Melissa has.”
She gave device to her attorney, who had made forensic copy.
We watched a preserved duplicate.
Before the basin appeared, Brooke had accidentally started recording while walking from foyer.
The camera pointed toward floor.
Audio clear.
Diane:
“Don’t let her turn it into a debate.”
Evan:
“I know.”
Diane:
“Make her obey once. Tomorrow will be easier.”
Brooke laughed.
“What if she throws the water?”
Diane:
“Then at least we know she’s still stupid.”
Then Evan:
“She signs tomorrow or North Coast pulls the line.”
There it was.
Direct.
Brooke’s own video.
She had recorded the plan before recording my humiliation.
Afterward, audio continued while her phone faced ceiling.
Evan after I left room:
“Once she signs ratification, we’re fine.”
Brooke:
“And if she doesn’t?”
Diane:
“Then Evan files.”
“Files what?”
“Divorce. He claims marital interest and freezes house until she behaves.”
I felt sick.
Hannah paused.
“What is ‘freezes house’?”
Brooke answered:
“Mom thought divorce court could stop you selling.”
“That part may be true under certain orders,” Hannah said. “It does not create ownership.”
Brooke nodded.
Then she looked at me.
“Evan told me yesterday he’s going to say I forged everything without him knowing.”
“Did he?”
“Yes.”
“Did he know?”
Brooke laughed bitterly.
“He emailed me the signature.”
Nina slid printed email across table.
Evan:
Use Claire signature from 2021 closing. Put it where marked. Melanie will handle notary. I’ll get ratification Thursday.
No ambiguity.
Brooke was guilty too.
May you like
But she was no longer willing to carry him.
The family alliance had begun eating itself.
