Chapter 21 - Evan’s Second Letter
Evan wrote one final letter after supervision ended.
Approved route.
No rule requiring me to read.
I did.
He had remarried.
That surprised me.
No details.
He wrote:
I told my wife about conviction before first date became serious. She owns her condo. I am not on deed.
I almost laughed.
Then:
I understand if that sounds like I’m asking you to congratulate me for basic decency. I’m not.
Good.
He thanked me for not making Heritage employees collateral damage in public fight.
I had done nothing special.
Then:
I spent years believing you destroyed my family by refusing to sign. The truth is the family arrangement required everyone to surrender something when Mom was afraid. You were the first person who stopped.
That line stayed.
Not because I needed credit.
Because it reframed dinner.
The basin was not origin.
It was the moment system encountered resistance.
I did not answer.
There was nothing left to say.
I asked Hannah, now semi retired, whether keeping letter mattered legally.
“No.”
I shredded.
