Chapter 20 - The Man Who Asked Permission

Noah moved into house after our marriage.

Technically he had already lived there.

Nothing changed except ring and insurance.

But one habit did.

He asked before moving furniture.

At first it irritated me.

“You live here.”

“I know.”

“You don’t need permission to move a chair.”

“You once told me people moving your things without asking bothers you.”

“That was Diane.”

“I’m not Diane.”

“Exactly.”

“So tell me when I’m over asking.”

We negotiated.

Small.

Normal.

This was what I once thought marriage always was.

Not perfect.

Clear.

We argued.

About renovations.

Travel.

His habit of leaving architectural samples on kitchen island.

I once shouted.

He left room.

Came back thirty minutes later.

“Can we continue?”

No punishment.

No audience.

No family jury.

One evening he found my old recorder app backup.

Not actual video, just incident file index.

“Delete?”

I hesitated.

“Cloud legal archive has copy?”

“Yes.”

“Then?”

I deleted local index.

He said nothing.

That night I slept badly.

Dreamed of basin.

Healing is not linear.

Next morning Noah made coffee.

“Want to restore?”

“No.”

“Okay.”

I didn’t.

Fear passed.
