Chapter 8 - The File Named for My Wedding

The WEDDING AGREEMENT folder had been created two weeks before I met Victor.
It contained one encrypted document and a scanned payment record.
The payment showed Moretti Maritime transferring three million dollars to Kane Meridian Holdings.
Authorization: Dante Moretti.
Purpose: Strategic family alignment.
The phrase made my stomach tighten.
Strategic family alignment sounded like marriage described by people discussing companies.
Dante denied approving the transfer.
Victor denied receiving three million dollars before meeting me.
His company bank records showed a deposit from a Moretti vendor for the same amount.
The money paid old debts and funded the expansion that made him appear successful when we met.
Victor had built the life that impressed me using money connected to my father.
“Did you arrange my marriage?” I asked Dante.
“No.”
“Did you tell Elias to finance Victor?”
“No.”
“Did you ever discuss him as a possible husband?”
“Never.”
Maya placed him under formal interview rules.
No family conversation.
No private promises.
“Who used the phrase strategic family alignment?” she asked.
“I do not know.”
“Could Elias?”
“Yes.”
“Could Leo?”
“Possibly.”
“Could your late attorney?”
“Yes.”
Dante had employed an attorney named Samuel Crane during the transition from his old operations.
Crane died five years earlier.
His digital archive remained inside Moretti Maritime.
The phrase strategic family alignment appeared in two old memos.
Both concerned partnerships with family owned shipping companies.
Not marriages.
Someone may have reused business language to make the transfer look like Dante arranged my relationship.
The payment signature remained the harder evidence.
Forensic review showed a live biometric approval.
The same projection method Leo used for M Harbor Resolution could create it.
The transfer occurred inside Dante’s study while he attended a federal cooperation meeting in Washington.
Leo and Elias both had access.
They claimed Victor needed funding to become a legitimate vendor.
Elias approved the financial structure.
Leo approved the biometric simulation because Elias said Dante wanted the investment kept private until Victor proved himself.
“Did either of you intend Victor to meet Sofia?” Maya asked.
Elias answered first.
“I told Victor she would attend the courthouse event.”
“That occurred after the payment.”
“Yes.”
“Why place him near her?”
“He wanted legal contacts.”
“Did you believe a relationship would help the company?”
“I believed Dante would trust Victor more if Sofia did.”
There it was.
No formal arranged marriage.
A calculated introduction.
Elias put Victor in my path hoping personal connection would protect the investment.
Victor recognized the opportunity and pursued it.
Leo claimed he never knew about the introduction.
Dante knew none of it.
The WEDDING AGREEMENT folder may have been created later by Victor to describe the scheme and implicate my father.
The encrypted document could answer who wrote it.
The key required Victor’s signature and Dante’s biometric phrase because the creator wanted both men tied to the file.
Maya obtained a court order for controlled biometric access.
Dante agreed immediately.
Victor refused.
His refusal could not be treated as proof of guilt.
Federal technicians attempted recovery through backup fragments.
While they worked, Moretti Maritime disclosed the three million dollar payment publicly.
The board classified it as unauthorized investment fraud.
Dante surrendered personal distributions until the company recovered the loss.
He did not ask employees to pay for his executives’ misconduct.
Elias’s frozen assets covered part of it.
Leo’s foundation returned unused funds.
The remaining loss entered insurance and restitution claims.
Dante’s company survived.
His reputation changed.
Several partners suspended contracts.
He described the consequences as overdue.
I watched him rebuild without demanding that I defend his name.
That mattered more than a perfect apology.
My own work changed too.
The state attorney’s office asked whether I would return as a fraud consultant after the trials.
I declined full time employment.
I wanted space beyond Victor’s crimes and Dante’s history.
I began advising a nonprofit that helped financial abuse survivors preserve digital records safely.
I told them something I had learned painfully.
Evidence should support leaving.
It should not become a reason to remain in danger until every file is complete.
The technicians recovered part of the encrypted document.
It was a memorandum written by Victor.
Dante Moretti does not know Elias funded Kane Meridian. If Sofia becomes attached to me, Dante will avoid exposing the company because exposure would hurt her.
Victor had understood the strategy before our first date.
He attended the courthouse reception because Elias told him where I would be.
He researched my cases.
He learned which arguments impressed me.
He built a version of himself around my values.
The relationship began with calculation.
Did he ever love me afterward?
The file could not answer.
His choices did.
Another line appeared.
If marriage succeeds, Sofia becomes compliance protection and indirect access to the Moretti network.
Victor had wanted my reputation and my father’s shadow at the same time.
The document did not prove Dante arranged the marriage.
It proved Victor exploited an introduction Elias designed.
The title WEDDING AGREEMENT was Victor’s private name for his own plan.
The final page remained encrypted.
Victor’s signature was still required.
Then his attorney contacted Maya.
Victor would provide the signature in exchange for transfer to a safer detention facility.
Several defendants connected to Dante had threatened him.
Maya arranged no private immunity.
Security conditions could be reviewed independently.
Victor gave the signature.
The final page opened.
One sentence appeared beneath a payment schedule.
If Sofia discovers the accounts, use Elena Harbor and force Dante to choose between his daughter and his freedom.
The plan had always included my father as leverage.
Yet one approval line appeared beneath the sentence.
