Chapter 4 - The House That Knew My Fear

Dante moved me to a federally approved protective apartment after the hospital discharged me.

Not one of his homes.

Not a property controlled by his security company.

Maya selected the location.

Dante disliked the arrangement and respected it anyway.

That was new.

The apartment contained plain furniture, reinforced locks, and no sentimental objects.

Nothing reminded me of Victor.

Nothing reminded me of my father.

For the first time in years, silence did not feel like someone waiting outside a door.

Maya’s technical team traced the attack on my audit server to Moretti Maritime headquarters.

The user accessed a maintenance channel available to four people.

Dante’s chief financial officer, Elias Ward.

His security chief, Leo Mercer.

The network administrator.

Dante himself.

The request used Elias Ward’s credentials.

Elias had worked for Dante for nineteen years.

He managed the company’s transition from private family business into a regulated shipping corporation.

He signed vendor contracts, insurance settlements, and international freight agreements.

His digital signature appeared on three of Victor’s shell company payments.

Dante refused to call him guilty before questioning.

I watched him struggle with the same temptation he once demanded from me.

Trust the family.

Protect the loyal person.

Wait before involving outsiders.

This time, he handed Elias’s records to Maya.

Federal agents entered Moretti Maritime before dawn.

Elias was inside his office.

He did not run.

He gave them his phone and requested an attorney.

The network administrator’s review showed Elias’s credentials had been copied during a software upgrade.

The copied key could have been used by another employee.

That did not clear him.

His private account received seven hundred thousand dollars from a Victor controlled vendor.

The payment was labeled retirement consulting.

No contract supported it.

Elias claimed Victor paid him for advice about warehouse automation.

“Did you tell Dante?” Maya asked.

“No.”

“Why?”

“He would consider outside consulting disloyal.”

“Did you provide Victor with access to Moretti signatures?”

“No.”

“Did you disable Sofia’s audit server?”

“No.”

“Did you know Victor was using Moretti vendors?”

Elias stopped answering.

The investigation searched his home.

Inside a locked cabinet, agents found copies of Dante’s signature, old company seals, and vendor authentication devices.

Elias said he kept them for emergency continuity.

Company policy prohibited removing them.

He had enough material to create the Moretti records.

His attorney requested a formal proffer.

No immunity.

Elias admitted helping Victor build false vendor histories.

He said the arrangement began before I met Victor.

Victor approached him for investment.

Elias refused direct funding but offered to make Kane Meridian appear connected to Moretti Maritime.

The association helped Victor secure bank loans.

In exchange, Elias received secret payments.

“Did Dante know?” Maya asked.

“No.”

“Why use his name?”

“Because banks trusted it.”

“Did you introduce Victor to Sofia?”

“No.”

“Did you tell him where she worked?”

Elias looked down.

“Yes.”

Victor had not met me by chance at the courthouse reception.

Elias told him I would attend.

“Why?”

“Victor said he wanted legitimate legal counsel.”

“Did you know he intended marriage?”

“No.”

“Did you warn Sofia?”

“No.”

I listened from another room through a secure feed because my testimony and safety were involved.

Elias had not selected me as a victim deliberately.

He placed Victor in my path because my reputation could help a client.

He never asked what Victor wanted beyond access.

The same indifference appeared everywhere around powerful fraud.

People saw one profitable request.

They avoided the full design.

“Did you disable the audit server?” Maya asked again.

“Yes.”

“Why lie before?”

“I hoped the network evidence remained uncertain.”

“When did Victor ask?”

“Two days before the abduction.”

“What did he tell you?”

“That Sofia had copied Moretti records and would destroy Dante’s company.”

Elias believed he was protecting the employer he had already betrayed.

He stopped my evidence release because exposure threatened his own payments.

“Did you know Victor planned to kidnap her?”

“No.”

“Did you know he planned to pressure her physically?”

“He said he would make her surrender the drive.”

“Did you ask how?”

“No.”

Maya ended the interview.

Dante watched the same feed from a separate room.

He appeared older when the screen went dark.

“I trusted him,” he said.

“So did I,” I answered.

“You barely knew him.”

“I trusted the company because it was yours.”

The distinction hurt him.

Victor had used Dante’s reputation to reach me.

Elias had used Dante’s authority to reach banks.

My father had spent decades believing fear protected what he built.

Fear also made employees hide mistakes until criminals could buy them.

Federal agents recovered most of the missing audit server data.

The physical drive remained in transit under the timed delivery system.

My biometric phrase could release its destination.

Maya advised waiting until every receiving point was secure.

Victor remained in custody on kidnapping, assault, and financial charges, but his attorney argued the warehouse detention came from a private marital dispute.

The chains, weapons, recordings, and henchmen made that argument weak.

Still, the full fraud case required the drive.

Victor sent me a message through counsel.

Your father used you before I did.

I ignored it.

A second message arrived.

Ask Dante why your mother died owing him twelve million dollars.

My mother died from cancer when I was sixteen.

She had no business empire.

No public debt.

Dante had always told me she left no financial records.

I showed the message to Maya.

She asked Dante directly.

His face changed before he answered.

“She did not owe me money.”

“Did twelve million dollars connect to her name?” I asked.

“Yes.”

May you like

The amount matched the Moretti transfers inside Victor’s files.

Continue to the next part: Victor’s message forces Dante to reveal why twelve million dollars once moved through an account carrying Sofia’s mother’s name.
