Chapter 1 - The Name in the Dark

Victor grabbed my chin and forced my face toward the helicopter light.

“You are nothing without me.”

His palm struck my cheek.

My body swung beneath the chains bolted above my head, and the metal cuffs tore deeper into my wrists.

A large man in black tactical clothing kicked the back of my knees.

My legs collapsed, but the chains kept me from reaching the wet concrete.

Pain traveled through my shoulders until my fingers went numb.

Another man seized my hair.

“Tell us where the drive is, you useless little wife.”

A third henchman lifted a wooden chair and smashed it against the floor beside me.

Splinters flew across my bare feet.

Victor watched without blinking.

Rain pushed through the broken warehouse windows and mixed with the blood running from my mouth. Beyond the loading doors, the Chicago skyline glowed across the dark river.

Victor had brought me to an abandoned meat warehouse because he believed no one would hear me scream over the helicopters and freight traffic.

He was almost right.

“I do not have the drive,” I said.

Victor punched the chain above my head.

My body swung backward and slammed against the steel beam.

“You copied my accounts.”

“I audited them.”

“You stole private company records.”

“You created fake vendors, false invoices, and offshore accounts.”

His smile disappeared.

“Those records belong to my company.”

“They belong to the prosecutors who will receive them.”

Victor leaned close enough for me to smell the bourbon on his breath.

“You never sent anything.”

He sounded confident.

That confidence told me his people had searched my office, home, vehicle, and bank box.

They had found nothing.

I had not hidden the evidence in any of those places.

“You spent six years believing I needed your permission to breathe,” I whispered. “Why would I need your permission to expose you?”

He struck me again.

The henchmen laughed.

Victor had perfected the public version of himself.

Successful.

Educated.

Generous.

The devoted husband who helped his anxious wife through emotional problems.

Behind closed doors, he controlled every call, every account, every friendship, and every door I was allowed to close.

When I discovered thirty eight million dollars moving through false logistics contracts, he stopped pretending the control was love.

His men abducted me from the parking garage beneath my audit office before sunrise.

A black hood covered my face.

Someone whispered that obedience would have kept me safe.

Now Victor believed pain would produce the location of the drive.

He did not understand that the drive was only one part of the system.

The helicopter light moved across his face.

He grabbed my jaw again.

“Who else knows?”

I let my head fall forward.

One henchman struck my stomach.

Air left my lungs.

Victor pulled me upright by the hair.

“Who has the evidence?”

I looked into the face of the man I once believed would protect me from my father’s world.

Victor knew exactly who Dante Moretti was.

Everyone in Chicago’s criminal circles knew.

Years earlier, I walked away from my father because I wanted a life untouched by his power, enemies, and reputation.

Dante agreed to stay away.

Victor interpreted distance as abandonment.

He believed I would rather die than call the man whose shadow I had spent years escaping.

That belief had brought him close enough to hear me whisper.

“Dante Moretti.”

The laughter stopped.

The man holding my hair released it.

Victor’s fingers tightened around my chin.

“What did you say?”

I lifted my head despite the pain.

“Dante Moretti.”

The helicopter light vanished.

Darkness swallowed the warehouse.

Victor turned toward the broken windows.

“What happened to the light?”

No one answered.

A red laser appeared on the chest of the man nearest me.

Then another.

Then five more.

Armed shadows moved along the catwalks above us.

Someone crossed behind the broken office windows.

Victor stepped backward.

A deep voice filled the warehouse.

“Take your hands off my daughter.”

One henchman dropped his weapon immediately.

Another ran toward the loading doors.

The doors slammed shut before he reached them.

Victor reached beneath his jacket.

“Do not,” I whispered.

He pulled the gun anyway.

A shot struck the concrete beside his hand.

The weapon fell.

Men descended from the catwalks in dark armor.

They moved with disciplined speed, securing Victor’s henchmen without firing again.

Victor stared toward the office balcony.

“You promised to stay away from her.”

The voice answered from the darkness.

“I promised her.”

Heavy footsteps came down the metal stairs.

Dante Moretti entered the red emergency light.

He was older than when I last saw him.

Silver hair.

Dark coat.

The same controlled expression that once made powerful men lower their voices.

His eyes moved over the bruises, blood, and chains.

Something cold entered his face.

Victor tried to recover his confidence.

“She is my wife.”

Dante stopped in front of him.

“Then you should have treated her as though you wanted to remain alive.”

“Dad.”

The word escaped me before I could stop it.

Dante looked toward me.

Every trace of threat disappeared from his eyes for one second.

He crossed the remaining distance and supported my weight while one of his men unlocked the cuffs.

My arms dropped.

Pain tore through my shoulders.

Dante caught me before I hit the floor.

“Medical team,” he ordered.

Victor stepped forward.

“She stole from me.”

Dante turned.

“She found what you stole.”

“You do not know what is on that drive.”

“Neither do you.”

Victor smiled through the blood on his lip.

“You think she called you for rescue?”

Dante looked down at me.

Victor continued.

“She called you because the final file carries your name.”

The warehouse became quiet again.

Dante’s hand remained steady beneath my shoulder.

His eyes changed.

“What file?”

Victor laughed weakly.

May you like

“The one Sofia was too afraid to show her own father.”

Continue to the next part: Dante rescues Sofia from the chains, but Victor’s final accusation forces her to reveal why the hidden drive contains the Moretti name.
