Chapter 4 - SABRINA COLE

Sabrina asked to speak.

The mistress.

The woman I slapped in a restaurant.

For a day I refused.

Then I changed my mind.

Not for closure.

For evidence.

She came with counsel.

Blonde.

Twenty nine.

Red blazer gone.

Gray sweater.

No makeup.

She looked at the bruise along my jaw and started crying.

I hated that.

“Don’t.”

“I’m sorry.”

“For sleeping with my husband or helping finance the deal?”

Her mouth opened.

Then closed.

“Both.”

At least she did not lie.

Sabrina worked as vice president of special situations at Blackridge Capital.

She met Evan eight months earlier.

During North Crest financing.

Affair began six months later.

Did she know he was married?

“Yes.”

Did she know me?

“Only from photos.”

Did she know about my trust?

“Eventually.”

When?

Three months earlier.

Evan told her Claire’s family trust was “administrative noise.”

He said Victor controlled everything.

Then Blackridge counsel discovered the warehouse approval schedule.

They required consent.

Sabrina told Evan.

Evan said Evelyn Mercer would handle it.

Then a signed consent arrived.

Mine.

Sabrina believed it?

“At first.”

Why?

Because she had seen my signature on publicly filed foundation documents.

Looked similar.

Then she noticed the witness.

Evelyn Mercer.

A senior CFO witnessing a family beneficiary consent.

Strange.

Sabrina asked.

Evan became angry.

Then he kissed her.

Distraction worked.

She hated admitting that.

Then the restaurant meeting.

It was partly personal.

Partly business.

Blackridge’s risk committee had refused to fund unless direct verbal confirmation from me occurred before closing.

Sabrina was telling Evan the deal was dying.

That was the “client meeting.”

I walked in.

She chose cruelty.

“You should stop pretending you’re still his wife.”

Why?

Jealousy.

Ego.

She wanted him.

No deeper justification.

Then I slapped her.

Evan dragged me home.

What happened after?

Sabrina texted him repeatedly.

He did not answer.

Then Evelyn called Sabrina.

“Where is Claire?”

Sabrina said:

“Evan took her home.”

Evelyn:

“Good.”

Then later:

“Do not contact him again tonight.”

Sabrina asked why.

No answer.

The next morning she saw news of an ambulance at Evan’s address through an internal security alert tied to Blackridge collateral.

She called police.

That was one reason officers arrived so quickly after Dad’s men.

Sabrina had not ordered the assault.

She had helped create the financial pressure around it.

Both were true.

Then she gave us something new.

Evelyn had a personal economic interest in Harbor Gate Logistics.

Through:

Mercer Strategic Partners.

Five percent.

Projected value after refinancing:

About $6 million.

My godmother would profit if the deal closed.

Dad did not know.

I did not know.

Board did not know.

Related party conflict.

Then another owner.

North Crest Development.

Evan’s company.

Twenty percent.

My husband would profit too.

Harbor Gate was partly theirs.

The forty eight million transaction moved lease economics from Hale Meridian into an entity they owned.

Then Dad asked:

“How much of Harbor Gate is Blackridge?”

Forty percent.

Other investors:

Thirty five.

Evan:

Twenty.

Evelyn:

Five.

The company needed cash.

Evan and Evelyn created a structure that gave Hale Meridian cash now while giving themselves part of the long term upside.

If disclosed and independently approved, maybe negotiable.

It was hidden.

My signature was used to make it possible.

Then Sabrina gave Detective Knox an audio message from Evan.

Sent two weeks earlier.

“Once Claire signs, Victor can’t reverse it.”

Sabrina:

“What if she won’t?”

Evan laughed.

“She always does eventually.”

That word.

Eventually.

May you like

My marriage had trained him to believe my no had an expiration date.

Continue to the next part: Claire discovers Evan and Evelyn secretly owned part of the entity buying control of the warehouse leases, turning the refinancing into an undisclosed related party transaction.
