Chapter 9 - The Board That Applauded My Erasure

Charles Wynn had sat at our dining table every Christmas for twelve years.

I attended his daughter’s wedding.

I arranged private cancer treatment for his wife through foundation contacts.

He raised an auction paddle while Harold called me worthless.

The gesture had not been drunken participation.

It was confirmation that the board operation could begin.

The forged resignation removed me as foundation operations director.

The board vote appointed Chelsea Wynn, Charles’s daughter, as interim executive administrator.

Chelsea worked for Mercer Continuity through a consulting company.

Within hours of the gala, she attempted to transfer foundation records into an external archive.

The preservation order stopped most of it.

Charles left with the physical folder and several original signature pages.

Airport records showed him boarding a private flight to the Bahamas.

The same region where Thomas, Caroline, Daniel, Lillian, and Margaret remained hidden.

Every road led toward the people officially dead.

The foundation board held an emergency meeting under independent counsel.

Several directors claimed they did not know my resignation was forged.

They believed Harold said I planned to retire after the gala.

Others admitted they saw the humiliation and laughed because they feared opposing him publicly.

One director said:

“We thought it was a marriage joke.”

I answered:

“You thought cruelty became harmless because the victim was his wife.”

No one replied.

The board suspended Harold and Charles pending review.

They appointed an independent administrator rather than returning control directly to me.

I supported the decision.

I had managed operations for eleven years, but the foundation needed examination beyond one family.

Some programs remained legitimate and important.

Scholarships continued.

Clinics continued receiving funds.

Employees continued working.

Removing Harold did not require harming every person the foundation served.

Harold had repeatedly claimed that exposing him would destroy charity work.

Independent management proved the mission could survive the man taking credit.

My marital case also moved forward.

Elena filed for legal separation, financial accounting, and recognition of the dormant Robbins trust.

Harold responded with a public apology.

He said alcohol contributed to the gala remarks.

He said private marital frustrations should never have reached the stage.

He did not mention the forged resignation, hidden parents, or trust control.

He offered to enter treatment.

People praised his accountability online.

A carefully written apology can become another performance when it addresses only the behavior already visible.

I released nothing.

Evidence spoke better than outrage.

Natalie provided messages connecting Charles Wynn to the candidate program.

Charles had monitored me before Harold entered the fundraiser where we met.

He reported my routines, grief, employment, and finances.

He recommended Harold approach through sympathy.

Harold followed every instruction during the first months.

Coffee at the same place.

Offers to help with paperwork.

Conversations about fathers.

Apologies for Frank’s treatment of Thomas.

I had believed intimacy grew through coincidence.

The pattern had been designed.

Yet twenty seven years contained moments no file could explain.

Harold holding our son after a fever.

Harold crying at Frank’s funeral.

Harold sitting beside me through a miscarriage.

Were those moments real?

Possibly.

Real tenderness does not erase planned control.

A person can love and exploit the same partner.

That contradiction is often why leaving takes so long.

Jackson met me at the hotel.

He had reviewed the marital records.

“Dad chose you from a report.”

“Yes.”

“Did he ever choose us after that?”

“I cannot answer for him.”

“I feel like my whole life was part of a transaction.”

“So do I.”

He looked toward the city.

“Natalie says she loved me.”

“She may have.”

“Does that matter?”

“It matters emotionally. It does not erase what she did.”

He nodded slowly.

He had begun understanding that two truths could coexist without canceling each other.

Jackson agreed to cooperate with the twenty eight million dollar loan investigation.

He surrendered messages and accounts.

He also agreed not to claim the Robbins shares through me.

“I do not want money attached to this.”

“You may still have rights through Frank.”

“Then independent trustees can decide.”

That was the first responsible financial sentence I had heard from him.

Natalie requested another meeting.

She brought a page stolen from Charles’s board folder before he left.

It showed the final plan.

After my public resignation, Harold would transfer the Robbins properties into Prescott Foundation Holdings.

Then he would divorce me under incapacity protection while preserving spousal management rights.

Owen’s appearance accelerated the schedule.

Harold attempted to file the petition before midnight.

My attorney’s preservation order reached the court first.

Natalie pointed to one line.

SUCCESSOR FAMILY BENEFICIARY: JACKSON PRESCOTT.

Harold did not plan to keep everything personally.

He intended to place the assets beneath our son.

That allowed him to claim the family inheritance remained with my child rather than stolen.

Jackson’s name became another moral cover.

Natalie said:

“He promised me we would control Jackson together.”

“Did Jackson know?”

“No.”

“Did you agree?”

“At first.”

“When did you change your mind?”

“When my mother told me your parents were still alive.”

“Why did that matter?”

“Because I realized every woman in the system had been told that one more transfer would protect someone.”

She looked down.

“I understood I would become you eventually.”

Natalie had seen her future inside my humiliation.

That may have contributed to her cooperation.

It did not make her victimhood equal to mine.

Charles contacted Owen from an unknown number.

He offered the original board folder in exchange for immunity and a payment.

Owen refused.

Charles sent one photograph as proof.

Thomas and Caroline sat inside a bright room holding the Robbins trust seal.

Behind them stood Harold.

The photograph was current.

Harold had supposedly remained in Miami under court restrictions.

His attorney claimed the image was fabricated.

Location monitoring showed Harold’s device at home.

A device could stay while a person left.

Security footage from his garage showed a man entering his car wearing Harold’s clothes.

His face remained hidden.

Either Harold escaped, someone staged his movements, or the photograph used another likeness.

Then a live call reached my phone.

Harold’s voice said:

“Anastasia, if you want your parents, withdraw the trust claim.”

I answered:

“Show me your face.”

The camera activated.

Harold appeared beside Thomas and Caroline.

My father looked toward me.

“Do not trade the trust.”

A hand struck him from outside the frame.

I stood.

Harold smiled.

“You always wanted to know whether I loved you.”

“Yes.”

“I loved how well you carried what belonged to me.”

May you like

The line ended.

Continue to the next part: Harold appears with Anastasia’s parents and demands that she surrender the Robbins trust.
