Chapter 8 - The Night Harold Returned with Blood on His Cuff

Harold told me he cut his hand at dinner.
The injury appeared the morning after the Prescott Mercy vanished.
A photograph from the foundation office showed blood on his shirt cuff before I cleaned it.
The shirt remained inside our home storage because Harold kept formal clothing for years.
Police collected it.
The blood did not belong only to him.
A second biological profile appeared.
Preliminary comparison suggested a close relationship to me.
Either Thomas or Caroline may have bled on Harold’s cuff.
Harold’s attorneys called the sample contaminated through decades of storage.
The shirt had been sealed inside a garment bag.
Context would require further analysis.
Harold refused questions about the Bahamas trip.
He claimed attorney privilege and marital privacy.
Neither protected evidence of possible financial crimes or unlawful confinement.
The court ordered him to surrender travel devices.
His old phone contained one deleted audio recording from the boat.
Wind and engine noise made most words unclear.
Caroline shouted:
“You took our daughter before you married her.”
Harold answered:
“I gave her a life.”
Thomas said:
“You gave her a cage.”
A struggle followed.
Daniel ordered someone to lower a weapon.
Lillian screamed.
The recording ended with a splash.
No voice clearly identified who entered the water.
Harold returned to Florida using Daniel Stone’s passport.
That explained why the passenger records did not show him leaving the Bahamas.
Daniel’s current status remained unknown.
The passport was later reported lost.
Harold may have stolen it.
Daniel may have given it voluntarily.
Every possibility required evidence.
The Bahamas authorities reopened the disappearance.
A marina worker remembered an older couple leaving the boat before dawn with a woman wearing a red coat.
The man used a cane.
The woman appeared injured.
They entered a black vehicle.
The worker could not identify the driver.
Harold departed separately hours later.
This suggested my parents survived the boat.
The red coated woman could be Lillian, Natalie, or someone else.
A hotel camera near the marina captured Caroline’s profile.
Beside her stood Thomas.
Behind them walked Daniel.
The fourth person wore a hat and kept her face hidden.
They entered a private medical center owned by Rodgers Atlantic Investments.
I confronted Owen again.
“Your company owned the clinic.”
“A subsidiary purchased it as part of a hospital portfolio.”
“Did you know my parents entered?”
“No.”
“Who managed the clinic?”
He checked the records before answering.
“My sister.”
I had never heard Owen mention a sister.
Her name was Margaret Rodgers.
Publicly, she died twelve years earlier from cancer.
The death certificate came from Dr. Nathan Vale.
Another legal death.
Owen said Margaret entered private witness protection after discovering Mercer Continuity accounts inside Rodgers Atlantic.
He told almost no one.
She continued managing sensitive clinics under another name.
“Did Margaret receive my parents?”
“She may have.”
“Where is she?”
“I do not know.”
“You lost your living sister?”
“She stopped contacting me after accusing me of protecting the company over victims.”
The pattern repeated even inside Owen’s family.
People disappeared because institutions seemed easier to control than truth.
Clinic records listed Thomas and Caroline under temporary identities for three days.
Discharge destination:
Rodgers Family Refuge.
No public location.
Authorization: Margaret Rodgers.
Owen requested access.
The system rejected him.
Margaret had removed his authority years earlier.
A sealed message appeared after three failed attempts.
Owen,
If you are searching because Anastasia finally knows, bring her without attorneys, police, or Prescott money.
I refused the condition.
No secret meeting would isolate me again.
We answered through the court, offering protected testimony, independent medical care, and victim counsel.
Margaret responded with a video.
She appeared alive, older, and visibly ill.
Thomas sat beside her.
My father.
His hair was white.
His face was thin.
He held the same watch.
I stopped breathing.
“Anastasia,” he said.
My name sounded exactly as it did in childhood.
“I am alive.”
I touched the screen.
Caroline entered the frame.
My mother had my eyes.
I remembered almost nothing of her face beyond photographs, yet my body recognized her before my mind accepted it.
She said:
“Do not come until Harold loses control of the trust.”
“I do not care about the trust.”
“You must.”
“I care about you.”
“The trust is why they kept us alive.”
Thomas explained that Mercer Continuity could not permanently seize the Robbins shares without living beneficiary acknowledgment.
Harold controlled me through marriage.
He controlled Thomas and Caroline through incapacity records.
If either parent appeared publicly before my authority was restored, Harold could claim they were confused and I had been manipulated.
Margaret Rodgers hid them while Owen pursued the legal review.
“Where are you?” I asked the screen though the recording was not live.
Caroline continued.
“Natalie knows part of the route. Daniel knows the rest. Do not trust either completely.”
Thomas added:
“The auction was supposed to begin Harold’s final control petition. Owen interrupted before the witnesses formed the story.”
That meant Harold’s drunken humiliation may not have been spontaneous.
He intended to provoke me publicly.
If I collapsed, cried, struck him, or fled with Owen, every response could support instability.
His cruelty was performative because the room itself was evidence.
Then Thomas said:
“One person changed the plan.”
“Who?”
The video continued.
“The guest who raised the first auction paddle.”
I remembered the laughing man near the front.
Harold’s business associate, Charles Wynn.
Charles offered five hundred dollars for me.
He also served as chair of the Prescott Foundation board.
He had signed every major transfer during Harold’s leadership.
Thomas said Charles worked for Mercer Continuity before Harold married me.
The first joking bid was a signal.
If Harold completed the humiliation successfully, Charles would open the incapacity vote.
Owen’s two million dollar offer disrupted the sequence.
Charles disappeared from Miami after the gala.
Foundation security footage showed him leaving with a sealed board folder.
Inside were signatures from nine directors authorizing Harold to remove me from foundation leadership.
My own signature appeared as voluntary resignation.
May you like
I had signed nothing.
Continue to the next part: The first laughing bidder carries the forged board vote designed to erase Anastasia after the gala.
