Chapter 4 - The Husband Who Found Me Too Quickly

Elena filed for a temporary protective order over my finances and records.

Harold responded by filing the marital instability petition.

He claimed Owen had manipulated me during a public crisis.

His attorneys attached gala footage.

The video began after his first insult.

It showed me standing silently while Harold attempted humor.

Then Owen entered, offered two million dollars, and spoke to me with familiarity.

Harold’s filing described the encounter as a staged romantic intervention.

He suggested I had maintained a secret relationship with Owen.

The claim spread through social media within hours.

Photographs of us leaving the ballroom appeared online.

Headlines asked whether I had abandoned my husband for a billionaire.

The public story became easier to consume than trust fraud and hidden medical care.

I refused to answer through emotional interviews.

Elena released one statement.

Mrs. Prescott denies any secret relationship. She is cooperating with independent review of financial, medical, and trust records. No further comment will be provided while evidence is preserved.

Harold appeared on television that evening.

He looked sober, wounded, and gentle.

He said the auction was a private joke misunderstood outside the marriage.

He said I had been under pressure for months.

He asked the public to respect my mental health.

Every sentence sounded protective while removing my authority.

I watched from the hotel.

Judith turned off the television.

“He has always been good on camera.”

“I taught him.”

For eleven years, I prepared his speeches.

I softened his arrogance.

I reminded him of donor names.

I edited language that sounded cruel.

The compassionate man on television had been partly my work.

That realization did not make me responsible for the lies.

It showed how much labor had hidden him.

Owen refused every interview.

He sent my attorney a folder instead.

It contained the original event records from the fundraiser where Harold first approached me.

Harold did not attend as a donor.

He registered through Mercer Continuity Partners.

The seating arrangement placed him beside my supervisor.

My name had been highlighted on his guest notes.

He knew exactly who I was before introducing himself.

A private report described me.

Age twenty six.

Only child of Thomas and Caroline Robbins.

Financially vulnerable after father’s disappearance.

Distrustful of Rodgers interests.

No current family support.

Likely responsive to Prescott apology narrative.

Harold did not meet a grieving woman by chance.

He received instructions for approaching me.

I read the final line twice.

Marriage recommended before beneficiary review reaches five year limit.

The old trust allowed me to reopen Thomas’s forfeiture claim within five years of being informed.

Harold ensured I never learned the trust existed.

Marriage gave him control over mail, taxes, and company communications.

The deadline passed.

Or so he believed.

The dormant fraud clause reopened everything if concealment could be proved.

Owen’s returned letters and Harold’s false records provided that proof.

I confronted Judith with another question.

“Did you know Mercer Continuity selected spouses?”

She looked toward the window.

“Not then.”

“When did you learn?”

“After Harold and I married.”

Judith’s late husband was also named Harold.

Harold Mercer.

My husband and her husband shared a first name, moved in the same business circles, and worked inside related companies.

Judith said Harold Mercer once joked that Prescott had followed the family integration plan perfectly.

She did not understand the phrase until years later.

“Why did you never warn me?”

“I thought your marriage was real.”

“A real marriage can begin with manipulation.”

“I know that now.”

“Did my husband love me?”

The question escaped before I could stop it.

Judith did not answer.

No one could.

Harold may have approached me for the trust and developed attachment later.

He may have loved the version of me that worked, forgave, organized, and remained.

Love that depends on silence becomes another kind of control.

Rebecca traced the doctor who signed Caroline’s death certificate.

Nathan Vale had retired to Arizona.

He agreed to speak after learning the records were under court review.

He admitted the death certificate was false.

Caroline had not died.

Harold Mercer instructed him to create a legal death because Caroline discovered the family integration program.

“Which Harold?” Rebecca asked.

“Mercer.”

“Did Harold Prescott know?”

“Prescott delivered the payment.”

The two Harolds had worked together.

My husband could no longer claim he inherited old paperwork without understanding it.

Nathan said Caroline was transferred under the name Anna Rhodes.

Years later, she remembered more about Thomas’s disappearance.

She claimed Thomas arranged to meet Owen near a marina with evidence against Frank Prescott and Harold Mercer.

He never arrived.

His damaged boat was found the next morning.

Harold Prescott signed the identification report for the boat.

At that time, he had never publicly met me.

Yet he was already involved in my father’s disappearance case.

Nathan gave us one final detail.

Thomas Robbins did not drown.

A private aircraft left Florida that night carrying a passenger under sedation.

Destination: North Carolina.

The same state where Caroline later lived.

Passenger name: Thomas Rhodes.

If Thomas survived, both of my parents had been hidden under the surname Rhodes.

Mercer House denied ever housing a man by that name.

Its archived records showed a locked wing called Rhodes Unit.

The wing closed three years earlier.

Harold attended the final closure meeting.

Security photographs showed him leaving with an elderly man in a wheelchair.

The man’s face remained turned away.

On his left wrist was the watch I had given my father for his fiftieth birthday.

Continue to the next part: A photograph suggests Anastasia’s father survived and remained under Harold’s control for decades.
