Chapter 9 - The Ledger beneath the Nursery

Thomas did not resist when I ordered him searched.

He carried no weapon beyond his registered sidearm and no copy of the trust files.

He did carry a second estate access card under another name.

Ethan Cole.

My former chief of staff.

The man who intercepted Marisol’s letters.

The man reported dead after my accident.

Thomas removed the card from his wallet and placed it on the table.

“Ethan recruited me,” he said.

“Before or after he died?”

“He did not die.”

Marisol moved closer to Valentina.

Thomas looked toward the child and lowered his voice.

“Ethan created a false death record after Elena discovered the trust diversion. Gabriel moved him into private security consulting.”

“Where is he now?”

“I have not seen him in two years.”

“Why carry his card?”

“Because he retained access to the old mansion systems. I used the identity to monitor his logins.”

“You opened the gate for Paulina.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She threatened to trigger a remote archive wipe if I stopped her.”

“You chose files over the child she attacked.”

“I believed you had the medallion and could recover the archive.”

“You gambled with their safety.”

“Yes.”

Thomas did not offer an excuse.

That honesty did not erase the betrayal.

I suspended him and transferred estate security to an outside firm. State investigators took custody of his devices.

The metal strip and medallion opened a panel beneath the original nursery.

My mother designed the room before I was born. After I grew up, it became a formal sitting room no one used.

Beneath the floor stood a fireproof archive containing land deeds, company ledgers, and recordings of meetings between Gabriel, Ethan, and several Villaseñor executives.

They had been creating false construction projects for more than a decade.

Company loans financed land purchases through shell corporations.

Gabriel then sold the land back to Villaseñor Global at inflated prices.

The difference entered private trusts.

Estimated theft exceeded two hundred million dollars.

My runway accident occurred three days after I questioned one of those projects.

The mechanical report had described brake failure during takeoff.

The nursery archive contained a payment to the maintenance contractor responsible for my aircraft.

Gabriel approved it.

Ethan confirmed completion.

The accident may have been intended to kill me.

My survival created a new problem.

Ethan isolated me during recovery while Gabriel controlled the company.

Marisol’s pregnancy threatened them because my mother planned to transfer descendant shares outside their authority.

They hid both mother and child while using the trust.

Paulina’s engagement gave the Robles family a path to permanent control.

Every piece connected.

But one original ledger page was missing.

It identified the bank holding the stolen funds and the person authorized to release them.

Paulina had taken that page from the rabbit recorder case before escaping.

Investigators searched her attorney’s office and apartment.

They found no ledger.

She agreed to speak with me from custody.

The meeting occurred through reinforced glass.

She wore no jewelry.

Without the mansion and cameras, she looked younger but no less certain of herself.

“Where is the page?” I asked.

“You still think I controlled this.”

“You ordered Marisol confined.”

“My father said she would destroy the merger.”

“You stole from Valentina.”

“I used money he told me belonged to the family.”

“You knew she was my daughter.”

“I knew she could be.”

“And you kept her beside the laundry.”

Paulina leaned toward the glass.

“You never saw her either.”

“No.”

“You need me to be the only monster because otherwise you must live with that.”

“I already live with it.”

My answer unsettled her.

She expected denial.

“Who has the ledger page?” I asked.

“Ethan.”

“Thomas says Ethan is alive.”

“Thomas is Ethan.”

The statement sounded impossible.

Thomas Reed and Ethan Cole looked nothing alike.

Paulina explained that Thomas had undergone facial reconstruction after the supposed death.

The security chief inside my mansion was the same man who intercepted Marisol’s letters and helped sabotage my plane.

DNA would confirm it.

Before I could respond, the investigator entered with Thomas’s fingerprint analysis.

It matched Ethan Cole.

The man I trusted to protect my home had been controlling access from inside it for seven years.

His holding room was empty.

A guard lay unconscious near the service exit.

Thomas had escaped.

The nursery archive alarm activated at the mansion.

Someone was removing the original land deeds.

Continue to the next part: Ethan returns to the mansion for the one document that can still move Valentina’s inheritance beyond my reach.
