Chapter 5 - The Voice inside the Rabbit

Paulina’s car was found forty minutes later outside a private airfield.

She was not inside.

The gate camera showed her entering a black vehicle registered to Robles Family Legal Services.

By then, Thomas had notified local police and the state financial crimes unit.

Gabriel called me before investigators reached his office.

“You have allowed a domestic misunderstanding to become a public attack on the family.”

“You stole from my daughter.”

“I administered a confidential trust under Elena’s instructions.”

“My mother ordered you to give Marisol housing and medical support.”

“Your mother feared scandal.”

“You certified I was mentally incapable of contact while I was running the company.”

“You suffered a traumatic brain injury.”

“I recovered.”

“Not completely.”

The insult was calculated.

Gabriel had spent years creating documents that would make any challenge sound like instability.

“What was inside the rabbit?”

“I have no idea.”

“Paulina escaped with a recording.”

“My daughter is frightened of your behavior.”

“She assaulted a three year old.”

“She attempted to remove unauthorized residents from private property.”

“They were authorized by my mother’s trust.”

Silence.

He had not expected me to know that.

The brass key from the rabbit fitted a concealed lock inside the mansion library.

My mother had designed the room before my father died. One carved panel near the fireplace contained a keyhole hidden inside a wooden rose.

The key opened a narrow safe.

Inside were original trust pages, photographs of Marisol meeting my mother, and a second recorder.

My mother’s voice filled the library.

“Marisol, if you are hearing this, Diego has either found the rabbit or the Robles family has become careless.”

Marisol pressed one hand against her mouth.

Elena continued.

“I believe you about the child. I also believe Diego would acknowledge her if he were permitted to know. Gabriel has begun restricting my access to company records. Paulina knows more than she admits.”

My mother had met Marisol after the runway accident.

Marisol told her about the pregnancy.

Elena created the child fund and planned to take her to my rehabilitation hospital personally.

The night before the visit, Gabriel produced documents accusing Marisol of theft.

He told my mother that Marisol had sold the medallion and attempted to blackmail the family.

Elena doubted him.

She hid the second recorder inside the safe and placed the first inside the stuffed rabbit she purchased before Valentina’s birth.

“I am naming Marisol Vega temporary protector of the descendant shares,” Elena said. “If I die before the child is acknowledged, she must hold those rights until an independent court confirms Diego’s fitness and the child’s safety.”

Marisol looked at me.

“I never knew.”

My mother had not given her the trust details because doing so would make her a target.

Instead, she asked a nurse to deliver the rabbit after Valentina’s birth.

That nurse later became the mansion’s housekeeper.

She died the following year.

The recording continued.

“The brass key opens this safe. The gold medallion opens the archive beneath the original nursery. Both are required because neither money nor memory should remain in one person’s hands.”

Paulina had taken the medallion earlier but failed to obtain it from my fist.

She escaped with the first recorder, not the key or necklace.

The safe also contained the complete child trust.

The independent protector was Judge Helena Moore, a retired federal judge and my mother’s oldest friend.

Helena had signed the document.

Her address was listed in Oregon.

I called the number.

Disconnected.

Miriam? Different story. Here maybe state. My attorney located her death certificate.

Helena Moore had died two years earlier.

The certificate was filed by Gabriel Robles.

No family member had confirmed the body.

Another person who could challenge him had conveniently disappeared.

The photographs inside the safe revealed more.

One showed Paulina standing near Marisol’s hospital room after Valentina’s birth.

She wore sunglasses and carried a document folder.

On the back, my mother had written:

Paulina collected the birth certificate before Marisol woke.

Marisol looked at Valentina.

“I was told the hospital misplaced it.”

The original birth certificate listed me as the father.

My signature appeared beneath the paternity acknowledgment.

I had been in rehabilitation hundreds of miles away.

Someone forged my name to establish legal parentage, then concealed the child.

The contradiction made sense only if the Robles family needed Valentina legally connected to me while physically invisible.

They wanted access to her inheritance without allowing me to protect her.

The mansion intercom activated.

A police officer stood at the main gate carrying an emergency custody order.

Petitioner: Paulina Robles.

Protected child: Valentina Villaseñor.

Continue to the next part: Paulina returns with a judge’s order claiming Marisol kidnapped my legally acknowledged daughter.
