Chapter 4 - The Test Paulina Tried to Stop

My engagement ended inside the library.

I removed Paulina’s ring from the trust inventory, placed it inside its box, and slid it across the table.

She did not pick it up.

“You are emotional,” she said.

“My daughter lived beside the laundry while you spent money stolen from her.”

“My father managed the trust.”

“You enforced the silence.”

“I protected you.”

“You protected your access to my company.”

Her eyes hardened.

“You think Marisol returned because she loved you?”

“She never left.”

“She accepted employment.”

“Under threat.”

“She had choices.”

“Between poverty and a forged theft charge?”

Paulina folded her arms.

“You are a billionaire. Every woman around you has a financial motive.”

“Your company received her daughter’s trust money.”

“That does not make her innocent.”

Marisol listened from the doorway.

I could see humiliation building in her face, not because Paulina’s accusation was true, but because wealth allowed every feeling she had ever expressed to be treated as strategy.

“She does not need to prove love to establish what you did,” I said.

Paulina looked toward Valentina.

The child had fallen asleep on a sofa with the rabbit beneath her chin.

“If that trust activates, your board will remove you.”

The first descendant shares carried special voting rights. Until Valentina turned twenty five, her legal guardian or the trust protector could exercise them.

Under ordinary circumstances, I would serve as guardian.

But my mother’s trust contained an exception.

If I had failed to acknowledge or support the child for more than one year, control passed to the maternal parent and an independent protector.

On paper, I had failed for three years.

The trust did not care that people hid the child from me.

Marisol and the protector would control enough votes to block executive appointments, property sales, and any merger involving Paulina’s family investment group.

“Who is the protector?” I asked.

Gabriel’s digital copy left the name blank.

The original document had been stored in my mother’s private safe.

After her death, the safe was found open.

Several documents were missing.

Including the letter mailed to Marisol.

Paulina lifted her ring box.

“You need my father to resolve this.”

“I need your father investigated.”

“You remove him, and the company lenders panic.”

“Then they can panic.”

“You sound brave because you have not seen the debt schedule.”

She opened her phone and showed me a confidential statement.

Villaseñor Global carried nearly one billion dollars in short term obligations tied to a merger planned for the following month.

The buyer was Robles Meridian Holdings.

Gabriel and Paulina’s investment group.

Without the merger, lenders could demand immediate repayment.

With the merger, the Robles family would receive significant control over my hotels and construction division.

Valentina’s newly activated shares could block it.

That explained the urgency.

Paulina needed to marry me before the child became public. A spousal authority agreement would allow her to influence my vote and challenge Marisol’s guardianship.

Throwing them out that morning had not been random cruelty.

The DNA request frightened her because it could stop the merger.

“Did your father create these debts?” I asked.

“They are legitimate.”

“Did he advise the acquisitions that produced them?”

“He helped the company grow.”

My finance team began reviewing the obligations.

Several loans were connected to projects that never reached construction.

Hundreds of millions had moved into consulting companies associated with Gabriel.

The child trust was only a small part of a much larger scheme.

Valentina woke and began searching for the rabbit.

The toy was missing.

Marisol looked beneath the sofa.

I checked the foyer.

Paulina had left the library during the financial discussion.

Her ring box remained on the table.

She had taken the rabbit.

Thomas sealed the estate again, but Paulina had already entered the private garage.

A camera showed her cutting the rabbit’s back seam while sitting inside her car.

Something small fell into her hand.

She stared at it, then reversed toward the service gate.

Security barriers rose unexpectedly before Thomas could stop them.

Someone inside the control room had opened the exit.

We found the rabbit on the driveway.

Inside the torn stuffing was a miniature voice recorder and a brass key.

The recorder was gone.

Continue to the next part: The child’s stuffed rabbit contained my mother’s final message, and Paulina had just escaped with it.
