Chapter 8 - The Account Rebecca Called Hers

Rebecca returned to Ohio because the custody court ordered Mason’s regular school attendance and exchange with Kevin.

She did not come home to Dad.

She rented a short term apartment.

Her lawyer negotiated release conditions before she surrendered on financial charges months later? We need investigation first.

The $620,000 moved during final sweep remained frozen.

Of that:

$410,000 sat in RMC Family Office account.

$210,000 had moved to a brokerage account.

No spending except $18,500 legal retainer and hotel/travel from her personal funds, not disputed.

Court froze.

Rebecca claimed she believed she could move funds because Dad had historically approved.

Then why fake my authorization?

Her answer:

“Bank required Daniel signature, and Dad told me Daniel was fine with family distributions.”

Dad denied.

Did he ever say?

Maybe.

There were texts.

Rebecca to Dad:

Need Dan approval?

Dad:

He won’t care. Just process same as before.

That hurt Dad.

He had created expectation.

But later:

Rebecca:

Bank wants Dan signature.

Dad:

Use prior paperwork. Don’t bother him.

He had effectively told her bypass.

Could this reduce Rebecca criminal intent?

It complicated early transfers.

Final sweep, however, happened after Mom said I was being told.

Rebecca knew I had not authorized.

Then her spreadsheet and signature files.

Hard.

Investigators separated periods.

2016 to 2020: Dad directly approved most. Potential trustee breach more than theft by Rebecca if she reasonably believed distributions lawful.

2021 onward: Rebecca increasingly used fake authorizations and self directed access.

2024? Current 2026? Story relative maybe around 2026. We don't need dates. Over last four years, clearly stronger fraud.

The prosecutor focused on provable acts rather than criminalizing every family transfer.

That was realistic.

Then Rebecca requested meeting with me through attorneys.

Julia advised against direct.

I declined.

She sent written statement.

Daniel,

Mom intended family money to keep both of us secure.

Dad always said you hated inheritance and would rather work.

I stopped reading.

Same story.

Then:

I did not steal from you for ten years. Dad approved distributions because my trust was structured badly and mine ran out while yours grew untouched.

Not untouched.

Then:

I used some of your signature files because Dad told me you had already consented to equalization.

There was no consent.

Then:

The final transfer was to protect money from lawyers and corporate trustees until family could resolve.

Protect by moving to her LLC.

Then:

You are doing this because you hate me and because Mason embarrassed Noah.

That made everything smaller for her.

Dinner caused prosecution.

Not choices.

I sent no reply.

Then Kevin, Mason’s father, contacted Emily.

Not me.

He apologized for Mason.

“He’s been awful to Noah.”

Emily said:

“He is a kid. But Noah needs space.”

Kevin agreed.

He had known Mason repeated phrases about Daniel’s family being “poor.”

Where learned?

Rebecca.

Mason told Kevin:

“Grandpa says Uncle Daniel thinks he’s better because he works for everything.”

That was fascinating.

Dad resented me for self reliance.

Rebecca mocked me as poor.

Both needed me below them for different reasons.

Then Mason started therapy after custody court.

Kevin received temporary primary custody while Rebecca’s criminal case proceeded.

Not because she was automatically unfit as mother due financial charges.

Because her sudden interstate departure, instability, and court violations mattered.

Rebecca had supervised? No, she could have regular visits under schedule. Fine.

Mason attended public school for first time after private tuition from trust stopped.

He hated.

Then adjusted.

Noah remained at his school.

They did not see.

Then one afternoon an envelope arrived addressed to Noah.

From Mason.

Emily and I opened? Since child mail, we told Noah.

“Want read?”

He shrugged.

“Yes.”

Mason wrote:

Sorry about spaghetti. I pushed you because I wanted Grandpa to laugh and Mom told me you always overreact.

Noah stopped.

Then:

I shouldn’t have.

No “but.”

No demand.

Noah folded.

“Do I have to answer?”

“No.”

“Can I later?”

“Yes.”

May you like

He put letter in desk.

That was more maturity than any adult had shown at dinner.
