Chapter 24 - The Last Account Statement

Mom lived longer.

At eighty six she still read every bank statement herself.

She joked about it.

“Trust but verify.”

Rebecca groaned.

I smiled.

When Mom died peacefully years later, her estate happened exactly as she had explained.

No surprise fortune.

No hidden debt.

Independent executor.

Rebecca’s share through protective trust? At this point restitution done and stable, but Mom’s plan remained. Could distribute outright maybe trust. She had chosen independent structure. Fine.

My share.

Mason contingent.

No fight.

The original Daniel Collins Trust had grown and changed over decades.

By then Noah was in his thirties.

Emily and I had used distributions carefully:

Education.

Home.

Retirement diversification.

Charitable gifts we chose privately.

No flashy family rescue.

No one came monthly asking.

If Rebecca asked for help? Once a medical expense? Maybe not necessary.

We gave gifts on birthdays.

Normal.

The trust’s historical litigation file eventually closed after required retention.

Corporate trustee maintained summary.

No hidden transfers.

No unknown beneficiary.

No offshore account.

No second trust Rebecca secretly drained.

No master thief behind her.

Richard had approved too much.

Rebecca forged and took.

Diane remained silent too long.

Those were causes.

Enough.

Then Noah asked when I would terminate trust if permitted.

At certain age maybe now I could withdraw? Let's say the instrument permitted full distribution at 50, but I chose continue amended independent management for estate planning. Fine.

“Why keep?”

“Because structure is useful when transparent.”

“So Grandpa wasn’t wrong about trusts.”

“No.”

“He was wrong about control.”

“Yes.”

Then Noah smiled.

“Can I be trustee?”

“No.”

He laughed.

“Good.”

I would not appoint family member simply because family.

Independent fiduciary remained.

Then I created separate trust for Noah with him fully informed.

He signed receipt.

We sat at table.

I said:

“This exists.”

He laughed.

“Groundbreaking.”

“Here is balance.”

“Dad.”

“Here are rights.”

“You’re traumatized.”

“Yes.”

He signed.

Actual signature.

I kept copy.

He kept original.

May you like

No one intercepted.

That was generational repair in paperwork.
