Chapter 22 - Rebecca Pays The Last Restitution
Rebecca’s restitution took years.
She paid from wages, asset sale, tax refunds.
Mom did not secretly cover.
Dad did not.
At one point she fell behind after job loss.
Court adjusted schedule, not erased.
She found another job.
Eventually, eleven years after sentencing, the final trust restitution balance attributed to her was paid.
Partly because recovered assets had reduced principal greatly.
The last payment was only $713.
Rebecca emailed corporate trustee confirmation.
Not me.
Good.
Trust sent notice.
Case satisfied.
No remaining civil judgment.
No hidden lien.
No other accounts.
Rebecca called Mom.
Mom cried.
Then Rebecca texted me:
It’s finished.
I answered:
I received notice.
Then after a minute:
I’m glad you finished it.
She replied:
Me too.
That was enough.
Her felony conviction remained.
No expungement yet maybe later according to law. She did not ask me support.
Her life after:
Modest.
Stable.
No new crimes.
Relationship with Mason good.
She never regained old status in family because family itself changed.
No “favorite.”
Then Dad.
He had already finished all payments.
Mom’s estate plan updated again.
She asked each child if they wanted know.
Yes.
Transparent.
No surprises at death.
Then one Christmas Mom handed everyone one page:
These are my accounts. This is my attorney. This is executor. No secrets.
Rebecca laughed.
“Mom.”
Mom said:
May you like
“I have learned.”
We all had.
