Chapter 10 - THE DOCUMENT WYATT TOOK
Wyatt did not leave the country.
Airport cameras showed him entering.
Then exiting through rental car area.
He wanted us to think flight.
Why?
Time.
The bank box was at Northstar’s old downtown branch.
Box 603.
Registered to Graham Cole.
After Graham died, successor access passed to Wyatt.
Police could not simply open because he was missing.
Samuel obtained court process through estate litigation because Henry’s records suggested trust documents inside.
Two days later, box opened.
Wyatt was not there.
Inside:
Graham’s personal ledger.
Original Red Creek refinance.
One cassette.
One sealed agreement.
And a document titled:
HENRY MARSTON REVOCATION OF SUCCESSION DIRECTIVE.
My heart dropped.
It appeared Grandfather had revoked the plan giving me control.
Signature.
Notary.
Two witnesses.
Date:
Six months before death.
If valid, Dad might have permanent control after all.
That explained Melanie’s confidence.
Then Samuel examined.
“This is not a will revocation.”
“What is it?”
“It revokes one earlier succession directive.”
Before final will?
Dates mattered.
The revoked directive had been created seven years before death.
The final will came later.
So this document did not revoke final will.
It revoked an older version.
Melanie and perhaps Dad had been presenting the wrong sequence.
Either misunderstanding.
Or intentional.
Then notary name:
Graham Cole.
Wyatt’s father.
Graham notarized Henry’s revocation years before.
Nothing suspicious if legitimate.
Witnesses:
Richard.
Diane.
My parents.
They had a document they could wave and say Henry revoked Sadie’s control, while hiding that he later recreated it in final will.
Narrative trick.
Not legal victory.
Then cassette.
Henry and Graham.
Graham:
Richard thinks this revocation gives him everything.
Henry:
Let him.
Graham:
Why?
Henry:
Because I need to see what he does when he believes Sadie is out.
This was uncomfortable.
Grandfather tested his own son.
Manipulative.
Then:
Graham:
And if he moves money?
Henry:
We document.
Graham:
That’s dangerous.
Henry:
So is giving him a company without knowing who he is under pressure.
Grandfather was not saint.
He played games with governance.
Some caused confusion later.
Then audio:
Henry:
If Richard corrects Red Creek, I may restore him.
Graham:
And if not?
Henry:
Sadie gets control with independent trustees.
So final will was consequence of Dad failing test.
Then a knock during recording.
Vivian entered.
My mother.
Henry:
We’re done.
Vivian:
No, we’re not.
She knew Graham.
She knew revocation.
Then audio:
Vivian:
Richard says you’re setting him up.
Henry:
Richard says many things.
Vivian:
You’re choosing Sadie over him.
Henry:
I’m choosing the company over pride.
Vivian:
She’s a child.
At the time I was twenty three.
Henry:
She asks where money went. Richard asks who questioned him.
That line hurt.
Then Mom:
If you take this from Richard, I will fight you.
Henry:
Then fight.
The tape ended.
Mom knew the final dispute years before Grandfather died.
She had not been surprised by inheritance.
She spent years preparing to challenge it.
Then why wait until my wedding?
Because Dad retained five year management window after death.
Five years would end in nine months.
My thirtieth birthday eight months.
Wedding six months.
Three clocks converging.
My marriage trigger simply moved everything earlier.
Dad needed refinancing before management authority expired.
Now urgency finally made full sense.
Then detectives found Wyatt.
At a motel outside Waco.
He surrendered through attorney after seeing Northstar freeze loan.
He had not taken the box document.
He had gone to meet someone.
Who?
A Northstar executive.
Name:
Charles Benton.
Why?
Wyatt wanted to sell information.
He offered Red Creek evidence in exchange for immunity from bank civil claims.
Benton refused and reported.
Wyatt was no longer only Dad’s ally.
He was trying to save himself.
Then he told investigators:
“There’s another will.”
Samuel stared when told.
“What?”
Wyatt claimed Dad showed him a scanned will dated three months after Henry’s final version.
In that copy, Melanie inherited control.
Not me.
Where was original?
Wyatt did not know.
Who had scan?
Diane.
