Chapter 4

Ava sat motionless after Brandon ended the call.

The apartment was silent.

Too silent.

She stared at her phone screen, replaying his words over and over.

"They used your name."

At first, she thought she misunderstood.

She wanted to believe she misunderstood.

Because there was a difference between being ignored.

And being used.

Being ignored meant they didn't care enough.

Being used meant they cared only when they needed something.

And that realization hurt far more.

The next morning, Ava met Arthur Hale at his law office.

The same attorney who had represented the Carter family for years.

But this time...

He wasn't there for Richard.

He wasn't there for Linda.

He was there for her.

Arthur placed a thick file on the desk.

"Ava, before you open this, I want you to understand something."

She looked at him.

"What?"

"You were a minor when these documents were created."

Her face tightened.

"So?"

"So legally, you could not fully understand what you were signing."

Ava slowly opened the folder.

Inside were copies of old agreements.

Company ownership documents.

Investment papers.

Financial guarantees.

And at the bottom of several pages...

Her signature.

A signature from when she was seventeen.

Her hands trembled.

"I don't remember this."

Arthur nodded.

"Because you were told it was something else."

Ava looked up.

"What?"

"Your parents told you it was paperwork for your college savings."

The room became cold.

"But it wasn't."

Arthur pointed at the documents.

"Your name was used as a temporary shareholder."

Ava frowned.

"Why?"

"Because your father's company had financial problems at the time."

Her eyes widened.

"He transferred responsibility."

Arthur nodded.

"Using you as protection."

Ava closed the folder.

For a moment, she couldn't speak.

All those years...

She thought she was invisible.

Unimportant.

The daughter who was never chosen.

But the truth was worse.

She had been important.

Just not in the way a daughter should be.

She had been valuable.

Useful.

A shield.

Arthur continued.

"The reason your father pushed you to sign the university deferral was not only about Brandon."

Ava looked at him.

"Then what?"

"He needed access to certain accounts."

Her stomach dropped.

"What accounts?"

"Accounts connected to the company restructuring."

Ava looked confused.

"Why would my education matter?"

Arthur hesitated.

"Because you were the only person whose name could legally unlock them."

The truth hit her.

The dinner wasn't about Brandon.

It wasn't about money.

It was about control.

Her father wasn't trying to make her sacrifice her future.

He was trying to make sure she stayed dependent.

At the Carter family house, Richard sat alone in his office.

The room that once represented his success now felt like a prison.

Every achievement on the walls.

Every award.

Every photograph.

Everything looked different.

Because he finally saw himself clearly.

He wasn't the father who built a family.

He was the man who built an image.

And he destroyed his family trying to protect it.

Linda entered quietly.

"Richard."

He didn't look up.

"What?"

She closed the door.

"We need to fix this."

Richard laughed softly.

A tired, broken laugh.

"Fix?"

She frowned.

"Yes."

He looked at her.

"You still think this is a problem we can manage?"

Linda stayed silent.

"The board knows."

A pause.

"The lawyers know."

Another pause.

"Ava knows."

Linda looked away.

That name hurt.

Because unlike everyone else...

Ava was the one person they couldn't control anymore.

Brandon walked in.

He looked exhausted.

For the first time in his life, he looked like someone who had lost everything.

"Dad."

Richard looked at him.

"What?"

Brandon swallowed.

"I want to tell the truth."

Linda immediately turned.

"Absolutely not."

Brandon looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because you don't understand what will happen."

He laughed bitterly.

"What do you mean?"

A pause.

"You mean what will happen to me?"

Linda said nothing.

And that silence confirmed everything.

Even now...

She was still thinking about protecting him.

Brandon looked at his father.

"I spent my entire life thinking you loved me more."

Richard looked down.

The words hurt.

"But now I realize..."

Brandon's voice cracked.

"You didn't love me more."

Silence.

"You just protected me more."

Richard closed his eyes.

Because that was the truth.

And somehow...

That hurt more.

That evening, Ava received an unexpected visitor.

Brandon.

She opened the apartment door.

He stood there alone.

No confidence.

No expensive clothes.

No arrogance.

Just her brother.

The person she grew up with.

"I need to tell you something."

Ava didn't invite him in.

"Say it."

Brandon looked down.

"I knew."

She waited.

"I knew about the money."

Her expression didn't change.

"I knew they were moving things around."

A pause.

"But I didn't know they were using your name."

Ava looked at him.

"Does that make it better?"

"No."

His answer came immediately.

"No, it doesn't."

For once...

He didn't defend himself.

"I was selfish."

Ava remained silent.

"I thought because I was their son, I deserved more."

A tear rolled down his face.

"I didn't realize they were taking from you."

Ava looked away.

Because part of her wanted to forgive him.

Not because he deserved it.

Because she missed her brother.

But missing someone didn't mean trusting them.

Brandon reached into his jacket.

He placed a small envelope on the table.

"What is this?"

"Something I found."

Ava opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

From Richard.

Her father.

Written years ago.

She read the first sentence.

And froze.

"I don't know how long we can keep Ava from finding out."

Her breathing stopped.

She continued reading.

The letter was not about Brandon.

It was about her.

Her parents knew she would eventually discover everything.

They had planned for that possibility.

They had discussed ways to control her.

Ways to convince her she was wrong.

Ways to make her doubt herself.

Ava's hands started shaking.

They didn't just hide the truth.

They prepared for her to find it.

The final line of the letter destroyed the last piece of hope she had.

Richard had written:

"If Ava becomes a problem, we need to make sure she has nothing left to stand on."

Ava slowly lowered the paper.

A problem.

That was what she was to them.

Not a daughter.

Not family.

A problem.

The next day, Ava made a decision.

She called Arthur.

"I want to proceed."

Arthur was quiet.

"Are you sure?"

Ava looked out the window.

At the city.

At her new life.

At everything she had built without them.

"Yes."

"What do you want?"

Ava answered calmly.

"Not money."

"Not revenge."

A pause.

"I want the truth recorded."

The lawsuit became public.

News outlets began asking questions.

The Carter family name, once associated with success, became connected with scandal.

Richard lost control of the company.

Linda disappeared from public events.

Brandon cooperated with investigators.

But the biggest shock came when the board discovered one final document.

A document Ava had not even known existed.

A document hidden in the company's oldest records.

It contained one signature.

One approval.

One decision that started everything.

And when Arthur called Ava to tell her...

His voice sounded different.

"Ava."

"What happened?"

"We found the original agreement."

"Between who?"

A long pause.

"Your father..."

"And you."

Ava froze.

"What?"

Arthur continued quietly:

"The document proves your father legally transferred control of everything to you years ago."

Her heart stopped.

"The company..."

"Was always yours."

Ava stared at the phone.

Because the family who spent years trying to convince her she had no power...

Had unknowingly built everything on her name.

May you like

And now the daughter they tried to silence...

Was the only person who could decide their future.
