Chapter 2

Richard Carter stood frozen in the hallway.

The phone continued ringing in his hand.

Everyone was silent.

Ava had already left.

But somehow...

It felt like she was still standing there.

Like her absence had become the loudest thing in the house.

Brandon stared at his father.

"Don't answer it."

Richard looked at him.

"What?"

Brandon's face was pale.

"Don't answer."

That reaction told Richard everything.

For the first time that morning, he wasn't looking at his son as the person he wanted to protect.

He was looking at him as the person who caused the disaster.

Linda rushed upstairs.

"What happened?"

Nobody answered.

She looked at Brandon.

Then Richard.

Then the phone.

"Who is calling?"

Richard slowly pressed the answer button.

"Hello?"

The voice on the other end belonged to Arthur Hale.

The Carter family's attorney for almost twenty years.

His voice was different.

Serious.

Careful.

"Richard, where is Ava?"

Richard looked toward the front door.

"Why?"

A pause.

"Because she sent me something."

The room became silent.

"What did she send you?"

Arthur didn't answer immediately.

That scared Richard more than anything.

"Financial records."

Richard's expression changed.

"What records?"

"Your company accounts."

Brandon closed his eyes.

Linda immediately noticed.

"Brandon?"

Arthur continued.

"She also sent internal emails, transfer documents, and copies of approval forms."

Richard's grip tightened around the phone.

"Are you saying my daughter stole confidential information?"

"No."

Arthur's response was immediate.

"I'm saying your daughter discovered something you hoped nobody would find."

Three hours earlier...

Ava sat alone at a small coffee shop twenty minutes away from her family's house.

Her suitcase rested beside her.

A cup of untouched coffee sat in front of her.

She wasn't celebrating.

She wasn't happy.

Leaving her family wasn't a victory.

It was a loss.

A loss she had been forced to accept.

She looked at her phone.

The email had been delivered.

Now there was nothing left to do except wait.

But waiting was harder than she expected.

Because a part of her still hoped someone would call.

Not to blame her.

Not to threaten her.

Just to ask:

"Are you okay?"

Her phone remained silent.

Ava had spent months collecting evidence.

Not because she wanted revenge.

Because she wanted the truth.

The first clue came when her university payment failed.

She thought it was a banking mistake.

Then she contacted the financial office.

They told her something strange.

The education account her parents created for her had been almost completely emptied.

At first, she blamed herself.

Maybe she misunderstood.

Maybe there was a reason.

Maybe her parents had made a mistake.

That was always what she did.

She gave them the benefit of the doubt.

Until she saw the transactions.

Money moved.

Account after account.

And finally...

An account under Brandon's name.

The worst part wasn't the money.

It was the conversation she accidentally heard.

Three months earlier.

Late at night.

She had walked downstairs to get water.

Her parents were in the kitchen.

Talking.

About her.

"We can't let her leave yet."

That was Richard's voice.

Ava stopped.

"She is getting suspicious."

Linda sounded worried.

"She doesn't know enough."

Then Brandon spoke.

"She knows about the account."

Ava froze.

"How?"

"I don't know."

Silence.

Then Richard said something she would never forget.

"Then we make sure she has no reason to look."

That night...

Ava understood.

They weren't protecting her.

They were protecting themselves.

Back at the Carter house, Arthur's voice continued.

"Richard, I need you to understand something."

Richard walked into his office and closed the door.

"Go on."

"Some of these transactions may violate company regulations."

Richard looked through the glass wall at Brandon.

"And?"

"And if the board sees these documents before you explain them..."

A pause.

"It could trigger an investigation."

Richard's face hardened.

"This is my company."

Arthur replied quietly.

"That may not matter anymore."

The sentence destroyed him.

Because Richard Carter had spent his entire life believing he controlled everything.

His company.

His family.

His reputation.

He built an empire because he believed money gave him power.

And now his own daughter had used the one thing he never expected.

The truth.

Meanwhile, Brandon was falling apart.

He walked around the living room.

"This can't happen."

Linda looked at him.

"Calm down."

"Calm down?"

He turned.

"Do you know what she sent?"

Linda stayed silent.

Brandon laughed bitterly.

"She found everything."

Richard entered the room.

The call had ended.

Everyone looked at him.

"What did Arthur say?"

Richard didn't answer immediately.

He looked at Brandon.

Then Linda.

Then the empty doorway where Ava had stood.

Finally, he spoke.

"The board is requesting an emergency meeting."

Brandon sat down.

His confidence disappeared.

"What happens now?"

Richard didn't answer.

Because he didn't know.

That evening, Ava received a message.

From Richard.

She stared at the screen.

For years, a message from her father could change her entire mood.

One sentence from him could make her feel proud.

Or worthless.

But now...

She felt nothing.

The message read:

"Come home. We need to talk."

Ava looked at it for a long time.

Then another message arrived.

"Please."

That word almost broke her.

Because she realized something.

They had never said please when they wanted to help her.

Only when they needed something.

Ava replied with one sentence.

"I already did."

Then she turned off her phone.

The next morning, the emergency board meeting began.

Richard sat at the head of the conference table.

The same seat where he had made countless decisions.

The same seat where employees feared disappointing him.

But today...

He was the one waiting.

The board members entered.

Then Arthur Hale.

Then a compliance officer.

Richard looked uncomfortable.

"Why is legal here?"

Arthur placed a folder on the table.

"Because your daughter raised concerns that cannot be ignored."

Richard opened the folder.

Inside were copies of the documents Ava sent.

His own signatures.

His own approvals.

His own decisions.

Everything.

Proof.

The room remained silent.

Finally, one board member spoke.

"Richard..."

He looked up.

"Did Ava Carter know about this?"

Richard didn't answer.

The silence was enough.

At that exact moment, Brandon's phone rang.

He looked down.

A message from Ava.

Only one sentence.

"Check the second folder."

His hands started shaking.

He opened the attachment.

His face changed instantly.

Because the second folder wasn't about money.

It was about something much worse.

Something even Richard didn't know.

Ava had found the document that explained why Brandon had always been protected.

Why her parents sacrificed everything for him.

Why they were willing to destroy her future.

And when Brandon saw the name written at the top...

He whispered:

"No..."

May you like

Because the truth wasn't just going to destroy their reputation.

It was going to destroy their family.
