Chapter 3

Brandon stared at the document on his phone.
For several seconds, he couldn't understand what he was seeing.
Then he read it again.
And again.
His hands started shaking.
"No..."
The word escaped his mouth quietly.
Linda noticed.
"What is it?"
Brandon didn't answer.
He simply handed her the phone.
The moment Linda saw the document, the color disappeared from her face.
Richard immediately noticed.
"What are you hiding?"
Nobody spoke.
That silence was more frightening than any confession.
Richard walked toward them.
"Give me the phone."
Brandon hesitated.
Then slowly handed it over.
Richard looked down.
And his entire expression changed.
Because the document was not about stolen money.
It was not about Ava's education account.
It was about Brandon himself.
Twenty-three years earlier.
Before Brandon became the favorite son.
Before Ava learned she had to fight for attention.
Before the Carter family became wealthy and respected.
Richard and Linda had a secret.
A secret they buried so deeply that they believed it would never return.
But Ava had found it.
A private medical record.
A legal document.
And a truth that changed everything.
Brandon Carter was not Richard's biological son.
Richard stared at the screen.
His breathing became heavier.
"Where did she get this?"
Nobody answered.
Linda looked terrified.
Because she knew.
Ava had found the one secret they had protected above everything else.
Even above their own daughter.
The truth was complicated.
Years ago, Richard and Linda had struggled with infertility.
They wanted a child desperately.
Their marriage was falling apart.
Then Brandon came into their lives.
Linda had never told Richard the complete story.
She had hidden a relationship before their marriage.
A relationship that resulted in a child.
When Richard found out years later...
He had a choice.
He could leave.
He could expose the truth.
Instead, he stayed.
Because he wanted the image of a perfect family.
He wanted a son.
An heir.
Someone to carry the Carter name.
So he made a decision.
A decision that affected everyone.
Especially Ava.
At the board meeting, Richard sat silently.
The people around him were no longer looking at him with respect.
They were looking at him with questions.
Arthur Hale placed another document on the table.
"There's more."
Richard looked up.
"What?"
Arthur adjusted his glasses.
"Ava did not only discover financial irregularities."
A pause.
"She discovered a pattern."
Richard frowned.
"What pattern?"
"Your family has been manipulating records for years."
The room became quiet.
Arthur continued.
"Brandon's business failures were covered using company funds."
Richard looked down.
"That was to protect him."
A board member responded:
"At the expense of company money?"
Richard had no answer.
Because suddenly he realized something.
He had spent years protecting Brandon.
But in doing so...
He destroyed everything else.
Meanwhile, Ava sat in a small apartment she rented near campus.
The room was simple.
A mattress.
A small desk.
A few boxes.
Nothing luxurious.
But for the first time in her life...
Everything there belonged to her.
No conditions.
No expectations.
No one telling her what she owed them.
She looked around.
It was strange.
She had lost her family home.
But she had gained something she never had before.
Peace.
Her phone rang.
She almost didn't answer.
But when she saw the name...
Richard Carter.
Her father.
She let it ring.
Then stop.
Then ring again.
Finally, she answered.
"What do you want?"
There was silence.
Not anger.
Not authority.
Something she had never heard from him before.
Uncertainty.
"Ava."
She waited.
"I need to talk to you."
"You had plenty of opportunities."
Her voice was calm.
"Every time I tried to talk, you told me I was emotional."
Richard closed his eyes.
Because she was right.
"I made mistakes."
Ava looked down.
"No."
A pause.
"You made choices."
The words hit harder.
Because they were true.
Richard lowered his voice.
"Did you know about Brandon?"
Ava was silent.
"Yes."
"How long?"
"Long enough."
Richard felt his chest tighten.
"You knew?"
"I found out while looking through the financial records."
A pause.
"I wasn't searching for that."
She swallowed.
"I was searching for why my education money disappeared."
Richard had no response.
Because that was the part he couldn't escape.
His daughter discovered the truth because he had forced her to investigate.
"Ava..."
She interrupted.
"Do you know what hurt the most?"
Richard didn't answer.
"It wasn't losing the money."
A pause.
"It wasn't even losing my education fund."
Her voice became quieter.
"It was realizing you would sacrifice my future to protect someone who never had to sacrifice anything."
Richard sat alone in his office.
For the first time in decades...
He had nothing to say.
That night, Linda came to see Ava.
Not Richard.
Not Brandon.
Her mother.
Ava almost didn't recognize her.
The woman who always looked perfect now looked exhausted.
Linda stood outside the apartment door.
"Ava."
Ava didn't invite her in.
"What do you want?"
Linda looked away.
"I wanted to explain."
Ava almost smiled.
"Everyone wants to explain after they get caught."
Linda's eyes filled slightly.
"I never wanted to hurt you."
Ava stared.
"But you did."
Silence.
Linda looked at her daughter.
"When you were born..."
Ava froze.
"What?"
Linda hesitated.
"When you were born, I was told I might never have another child."
Ava waited.
"And then Brandon came."
The pain in her mother's voice was real.
But it didn't erase anything.
"I loved you."
Ava looked at her.
"Then why did I always feel like I had to compete with him?"
Linda couldn't answer.
Because there was no answer that could fix years of damage.
The next morning, Ava received another message.
This time from Arthur.
"We found something else."
She called immediately.
"What now?"
Arthur's voice was serious.
"Your father wasn't the only one hiding things."
Ava became still.
"What do you mean?"
"There are documents showing Brandon knew about the financial transfers."
A pause.
"And he wasn't just receiving the money."
Ava frowned.
"Then what was he doing?"
Arthur answered quietly.
"He was helping move it."
Ava closed her eyes.
Because a small part of her still hoped Brandon was just protected.
Just spoiled.
Just immature.
But now she understood.
He wasn't only the person who benefited from the family's choices.
He was part of the reason they happened.
That evening, Brandon finally called.
Ava answered.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Brandon whispered:
"I'm sorry."
Ava closed her eyes.
The old Ava would have immediately wanted to forgive him.
The old Ava would have searched for excuses.
But she wasn't that person anymore.
"What are you sorry for?"
Brandon went silent.
"I..."
He couldn't answer.
Because he realized he had never actually admitted what he did.
Not once.
"You don't even know, do you?"
His voice cracked.
"Ava..."
"No."
Her voice remained calm.
"You are sorry because you lost control."
Silence.
"You are sorry because people found out."
Brandon started crying.
But Ava didn't feel satisfaction.
Only sadness.
Because she remembered the brother she wanted him to be.
Not the person he chose to become.
Before ending the call, Brandon said something that made her freeze.
"There is something you don't know."
Ava became quiet.
"What?"
Brandon took a shaky breath.
"Mom and Dad didn't just use your money."
A pause.
"They used your name."
Her heart stopped.
"What are you talking about?"
Brandon whispered:
"The company documents."
Ava stood up.
"What documents?"
"The ones you signed when you were seventeen."
Suddenly, everything became clear.
The old papers.
The family meetings.
The signatures she never questioned.
Brandon continued:
"You weren't just the daughter they ignored."
"You were the person they planned to blame."
Ava felt cold.
Because the betrayal was deeper than she ever imagined.

And the next document she discovered...
Would reveal exactly how far her family was willing to go to save themselves.
