Chapter 8 - THE FLIGHT TO ZURICH
Edward Chase claimed coincidence.
His lawyer said he was traveling for a scheduled client matter.
Sofia was on separate business.
Same booking reference contradicted.
Then Edward admitted.
He hired Sofia as administrative consultant for an old trust review in Switzerland.
Which trust?
Isabel Varela Legacy Account.
My mother’s.
Why would Mendoza counsel review my mother’s trust?
Because of the old twelve percent Mendoza Distribution interest.
The same interest someone terminated using my forged signature.
Edward had recently learned the release might be invalid.
He was traveling to examine historical custody records.
Why flee now?
He said he booked weeks earlier.

Victoria shouted from across room:

“No.”
“Did anyone ask for it?”
Edward Chase.
The room went silent.
Edward requested “clean signature specimen” during emergency closing.
Why?
He said lender needed identity comparison for marital acknowledgments.
Was that normal?
Sometimes.
Sofia sent Elena’s gala signature.
Did Edward paste it?
He denied.
Then Sofia said:
“I saw the guarantee after.”
“When?”
“Two days later.”
“Did it contain Elena’s signature?”
“Yes.”
“What did you do?”
“I asked Mr. Chase if Elena had approved.”
“What did he say?”
“She would.”
Not had.
Would.
That mattered.
Then:
“I told him that wasn’t okay.”
“What happened?”
“He told me financing would collapse by morning and thousands of people could miss payroll.”
Pressure.
Moral justification.
Then:
“Did you report?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“I was twenty six. Victoria had already fired me once. Edward said if the company failed, everyone would know I delayed the financing.”
She stayed quiet.
Then Gabriel later hired her.
Did she tell him?
“No.”
Why?
“I thought the guarantee was never used.”
It was.
Then why Zurich now?
Edward contacted her after Elena’s divorce because he wanted to locate the original Isabel release.
He believed if the old Mendoza interest was valid, the Varela family could claim additional rights.
Sofia knew family office archives.
She agreed.
So she was not necessarily escaping.
She was helping search.
Then Edward finally admitted one critical fact.
He assembled the false guarantee package.
Not because Victoria ordered him.
Not because Alejandro ordered.
Because emergency lender representative told him:
“Get the spouse acknowledgment into closing set. We can ratify later.”
Who was lender representative?
Monica Price.
She denied saying it.
Edward had handwritten notes.
M.P. spouse acknowledgement can follow post close. Insert specimen now to avoid funding delay.
If authentic, Monica authorized temporary placeholder signature.
That would be serious.
Monica’s lawyer demanded original.
Forensics showed notes contemporaneous.
She changed statement.
“I may have said an unsigned placeholder could follow.”
“Not signature specimen.”
“I never authorized forgery.”
Possible miscommunication.
Then Edward admitted:
“I should not have inserted it.”
There.
Finally someone accepted a concrete act.
“You forged Elena’s signature.”
“I inserted a signature specimen into a draft expected to be ratified.”
Maya’s voice went cold.
“Did Elena ratify?”
“No.”
“Did you remove it?”
“No.”
“Did lenders rely?”
“Yes.”
That was enough.
He had crossed the line.
Why did Alejandro’s witness signature appear underneath?
Edward assembled witness page from separate certificate.
He thought Alejandro’s general closing acknowledgment covered package.
It did not.
So Alejandro truly had not witnessed my false signature.
He signed other closing papers.
Edward constructed a document that made it look like he had.
Alejandro sank into a chair.
For the first time that day, I believed his shock.
He had still spent five years humiliating me.
Still joined Victoria.
Still benefited from money.
But not every crime belonged to him.
Then Grandfather asked Edward:
“Who changed UNKNOWN to ACKNOWLEDGED on related party rider?”
Edward answered:
“I did not.”
Who had final edit?
Monica.
Varela operations.
Mendoza archive had original unknown.
So alteration occurred lender side.
Monica again.
Then she produced her own archived PDF.
UNKNOWN.
So not her.
Varela archive copy altered after her upload.

SOFIA.KANE.
Every person stared at her.
Sofia shook her head.
“I didn’t work for Varela then.”
Correct.
The account was created years later.
How could her username appear in a three year old file?
Timestamp of alteration:
Six months ago.
Not three years.
Someone changed archived lender copy recently.
After Sofia joined Gabriel’s office.
Why?
To make it appear Alejandro knew Elena’s relationship before Easter.
Who benefited from that?
Someone who wanted me to distrust him beyond the divorce.
Or wanted to make the entire Mendoza financing look intentionally fraudulent.
Sofia’s account altered the file six months ago.
She said she never did.
