Chapter 13 - FOLDER C

Alejandro remembered Folder C after midnight.
We were still at my estate.
Most relatives had gone.
Victoria left with Paola and her attorney.
Grandfather stayed.
Alejandro sat across from me in the library where our divorce papers had been discussed three weeks earlier.
“Dad gave me a folder.”
“When?”
“Before his surgery.”
“What was inside?”
“Old family agreements.”
“What happened to it?”
“I took it home.”
“Which home?”
Ours.
My chest tightened.
During marriage, Alejandro kept a locked cabinet in our study.
I never opened it.
Not because he asked.
Because I respected privacy.
Apparently Folder C sat six feet from my desk.
Then what?
After Sebastián recovered from surgery, Alejandro intended to return.
Forgot.
When Sebastián died two years later, Alejandro searched.
Folder gone.
Who could access cabinet?
Alejandro.
Me.
Housekeeper.
Victoria had key?
“No.”
Paola?
“No.”
Then he remembered one night.
Victoria borrowed our house while we traveled.
Why?
Her kitchen was being renovated.
She stayed four days.
Could she access?
Maybe.
No proof.
Then mansion storage from divorce.
Alejandro’s boxes had been moved to company condo.
My boxes moved to estate.
The study cabinet itself went into storage.
Could Folder C still be inside hidden compartment?
We checked.
The cabinet was in a warehouse controlled by moving company.
Maya arranged retrieval next morning.
Drawer empty.
But back panel loose.
Inside:
A thin gray folder.
C.
Alejandro stared.
“I never put it there.”
Sebastián may have.
Or someone later.
We opened.
First document:
ISABEL VARELA PARTICIPATION AGREEMENT.
Known.
Second:
SANTA AURELIA ESCROW.
Known.
Third:
MENDOZA VARELA FAMILY PROTOCOL.
Unknown.
Date:
Seven years ago.
Before I met Alejandro.
Parties:
Sebastián Mendoza Sr.
Isabel Varela Legacy Trust representative.
Who represented Mom’s trust after death?
Gabriel Varela.
My uncle.
Signature.
Purpose:
Resolve old participation while preventing future personal relationships between descendants from affecting financing.
That phrasing stopped me.
“Future personal relationships?”
The protocol specifically said:
Any social, marital or domestic relationship between Mendoza and Varela descendants shall not alter economic rights without independent consent.
Why draft this before we met?
Because both families had overlapping business and social circles.
General.
Maybe.
Then Appendix A.
Known adult descendants.
Alejandro Mendoza.
Elena Varela.
Paola Mendoza.
Gabriel’s children.
Names.
Compliance roster.
Not matchmaking.
Still strange.
Then a handwritten note by Sebastián:
If A and E ever meet, keep business out.
A and E.
Alejandro and Elena.
He had considered possibility.
Maybe because both in Boston circles.
Then Gabriel’s note:
Agreed. Elena wants no family involvement in personal life.
So my uncle knew Sebastián was aware of me.
But not that we would marry.
Then another document.
Dated eighteen months before our first meeting.
EVENT OVERLAP REVIEW
Boston hospital foundation fundraiser.
Expected attendees:
Alejandro Mendoza.
Elena Varela.
My pulse changed.
Someone had literally identified the event where we later met.
Who created review?
Mendoza Family Office.
Why?
Compliance.
Because Varela Capital principals and borrower family attending same fundraiser could create appearance concerns.
That was plausible.
Then note:
No deal discussion authorized.
Fine.
But handwritten beneath:
Could be useful.
Initials:
V.M.
Victoria Mendoza.
Alejandro closed his eyes.
“What did she mean?”
We called her.
She refused at first.
Then answered through attorney.
“Yes, I wrote it.”
“Useful how?”
She had wanted Alejandro to meet people from wealthy families.
Not specifically me.
She thought a Varela descendant might be there.
She knew Sebastián’s report.
Did she tell Alejandro to attend?
“Yes.”
“Did you tell him I would be there?”
“No.”
Why not?
She wanted him to behave naturally.
My stomach turned.
“So you arranged for us to be in the same room.”
“I arranged for my single son to attend a fundraiser.”
“Where you knew a Varela granddaughter might be.”
“Yes.”
“And when your investigator later told you I wasn’t wealthy enough, you decided the plan failed.”
Her silence answered.
I looked at Alejandro.
He looked sick.
Our first meeting had not been completely random.
Not orchestrated to marry.
But Victoria had nudged him into a room hoping he might meet money.
Then the sparkling water accident.
Our conversation.
Our second date.
Five years.
Those belonged to us.
But the doorway did not.
Alejandro whispered:
“I didn’t know.”
“I believe you.”
Again.
That did not save marriage.
Then Folder C contained one more sheet.
Confidential memorandum from Sebastián.
Victoria is becoming too interested in Varela relationship. Do not let her use Elena to renegotiate our debt.
He knew his wife.
Then:
If Alejandro marries Elena, amend lender files so neither family can use marriage as collateral.
Did he amend?
A draft existed.
Never executed.
Why?
Sebastián became ill.
Then died.
The protection he intended never happened.
Instead the opposite occurred.
My identity became fake collateral.
Victoria used my signatures.
Gabriel hid financing.
Everyone turned marriage into finance without telling the married people.
Then Maya found a small USB taped inside Folder C.
Video.
Sebastián.
Recorded six months before death.
“Elena, if you ever see this, something went wrong.”
I stopped breathing.
“You may believe Alejandro married you because of your name.”
He shook his head.
“He did not.”
Alejandro started crying.
Sebastián continued.
“Victoria may have wanted him in that room. I allowed it because I believed adults can survive introductions.”
Then:
“What happens after an introduction belongs to them.”
That mattered.
Then he looked tired.
“But if the marriage fails, do not let either family rewrite what happened to suit the money.”
Exactly what everyone was doing.
Then final warning.
“There is one person I do not trust with the Mendoza Varela protocol.”
Who?
Sebastián named:
Gabriel Varela.
My uncle.
Why?
“Because Gabriel believes family capital should control family outcomes.”
Grandfather’s face hardened.
I looked at him.
“Did you know?”
“No.”
Video continued.
“Gabriel asked me once whether Alejandro would sign a post marital business alignment if he married Elena.”
My stomach dropped.
May you like
That sounded much worse.
Continue to the next part: Sebastián’s final video says Elena’s own uncle once asked whether Alejandro could be made to sign a business alignment after marrying her, raising the possibility that Gabriel had plans neither spouse knew about.
