Chapter 6 - THE DEAD MAN’S EMAIL
The Easter dinner ended at 4:22 p.m.
Nobody ate dessert.
By then even the relatives who came hoping to watch me fail understood the gates had closed around a financial investigation much larger than my divorce.
I let anyone leave.
Some stayed because their names appeared on compensation schedules.
Others because they were afraid leaving looked guilty.
That is the thing about families built around money.
People mistake proximity for protection until accountants arrive.
Maya moved our meeting from the library to the estate office.
Peter Lang joined remotely from Arizona.
He looked tired.
Not sick.
Just done.
He authenticated the legacy email.
Mendoza maintained executive archive accounts after death so historical files remained searchable.
They should not send messages.

Peter nodded.
“At board meeting.”
“Who presented it?”
“Nolan Chase.”

Edward Chase, longtime Mendoza attorney.
He had prepared closing memo.
Where did he get release?
Victoria’s office.
Again.
Edward joined call.
“I received it from the family records portal.”
Not direct person.
Uploaded under admin identity:
VMENDOZA.
Victoria.
She denied.
Could be hacked.
Could be used.
We needed stop assuming usernames were people.
Pattern itself mattered.
Someone repeatedly used old, trusted accounts to create plausible documents.
My trust.
Alejandro’s email.
Sebastian’s archive.
Victoria’s portal.
Then Maya asked:
“Who administers Mendoza family systems?”
Company IT vendor:
Sentinel Grove Technologies.
Contracted eight years.
Owner:
David Price.
Another Price.
No relation to Monica Price? We checked.
Actually husband.
Monica Price had married David nine years ago.
There.

David from Mendoza IT.
A married couple sat on opposite sides of the financial relationship.
Neither company had flagged it?
Monica disclosed spouse in compliance file.
She was restricted from certain Mendoza matters.
But archived logs showed she continued accessing.

Her manager granted exception.
Who?
Grant Holloway? No, Varela Capital internal maybe COO. Let's keep simpler: exception approved by Gabriel Varela during workout because Monica had institutional knowledge.
Gabriel looked sick.
“I approved temporary access.”
So Elena's uncle accidentally allowed the person whose spouse controlled Mendoza systems to touch both sides.
That created an obvious channel for documents.
Were Monica and David orchestrating?
Possibly.
Need evidence.
Grandfather’s team contacted both.
Monica had already retained counsel.
David too.
They denied fraud.
Then one fact changed perspective.
Monica reported the forged Valle Verde guarantee internally two years ago.
She was not hiding it.
Her complaint said:
Document appears to overstate VDSR support. I did not create beneficiary consent. Deal team directed use of summary.
Who was deal team?
Three names.
Gabriel Varela.
Peter Lang.
And Edward Chase.
All three denied directing false consent.
Could be misunderstanding.
Then Monica resigned because compliance investigation concluded “documentation irregular but no loss.”
She believed cover up.
She joined Black Harbor partly because of that.
So she may be whistleblower, not architect.
Her husband David Price had accessed Mendoza systems because he was IT vendor.
Normal.
Did he create dead account email?
Logs showed his admin certificate.
But system logs automatically record vendor master certificate for any privileged session.
Cannot attribute individual action.
Again, evidence less clean than accusation.
Then Monica agreed to one interview through counsel.
Her first sentence:
“Elena Varela’s guarantee was never meant to guarantee Mendoza debt.”
“What was it for?”
“Payroll protection.”
That surprised me.
During emergency workout, Varela family office considered placing twenty million into a segregated reserve that could only fund employee wages if Mendoza entered restructuring.
Not repay lenders.
Not protect owners.
Employees.
Why?
My mother’s old side agreement.
Isabel Varela had included a worker continuity clause when she invested twenty years ago.
If Mendoza Distribution failed, a reserve should protect employees for ninety days.
Gabriel remembered.
He had called Valle Verde as possible source if needed.
Monica saw that.
Somebody converted “employee continuity reserve may be available” into “family guarantee available.”
Who?
She believed Peter Lang.
Peter denied.
Then Peter produced his own email.
To Edward Chase:
Do not use Valle Verde as lender support. It is payroll only.
Edward replied:
Understood.
So not Peter.
Edward’s later draft?
It still showed payroll restriction.
Then final lender package changed.
Where?
Varela Capital deal operations.
Monica’s system.
She said a senior officer ordered replacement.
Name:
Rafael Varela.
My grandfather.
The room went silent.
Grandfather looked genuinely stunned.
“I gave no such instruction.”
Monica produced email.
From his account.
USE FULL FAMILY SUPPORT. CLOSE TONIGHT.

Date:
2:06 a.m.
Three years ago.
Grandfather was in Switzerland that night.
Could send from anywhere.
Did he remember?
“No.”
His assistant calendar showed he was hospitalized for cardiac arrhythmia.
Sedated.
His email account remained active under delegated authority.
Who held delegation?
Gabriel.
My uncle.
